Maps are conventionally drawn with north at the top of the sheet. But Northamptonshire by Blome (1673), Morden (1695) and Bowen (1720) all have west at the top and north on the right. Why? Is this because it emphasises the importance of the River Nene flowing across the county which was largely navigable?
