How #Stoicism hides in your favorite #superhero stories | Marc Bowker

youtube.com/watch?v=HapiPAHVt9

What if the #villains we’re really fighting aren’t out there—but in here?

#Anxiety. #Depression. #Selfdoubt. "In my #TEDx talk, I reveal how the ancient #wisdom of the #Stoics and the modern mythology of #superheroes helped me face those battles—and how you can become the hero of your own story."

In essence, if any of histories great enlightenment males, like your Hemingways, Descartes and Aristotles saw what was going on, they'd recommend burning the system down to the ground.

When decadent, vein & degenerate males go on to a #podcast and abuse language by calling themselves "#stoic" (when the #stoics would have branded them as #narcissists, who the stoics said were the ones who destroyed #ancient #Greek #society), that's when we know the delusions and degeneracy #capitalism imposes.

I admire #Buddhists and #Stoics and people like that who found a way to accept and rise above their suffering.

Good on ya but I also know that there are types of suffering that can be addressed. My ankle is kaput, and I'll be damned if I'm just going to sit here and "accept" the pain or try and "rise above it".

I'm getting it fixed. Sadly a replacement can't be made to fit my crazy talipes type anatomy, but immobilisation will take away the pain.

Heigh ho, heigh ho.

@kravietz

May I add some hashtags in order to solicit views of psychologists and others who deal with human (or animal) cognitive modelling of reality? I would be fascinated to read about the degree to which we're all vulnerable to bias, the highest-yield methods of protecting oneself from bias (especially in social media), and of helping reflect back to others their own views in a way that lets them critique them. I think the last point is especially hard, especially if the other person has no desire for critical thinking (and as humans, we are terrible at critical thinking!).

If there are any textbooks on the subject, ideally written by scientists &/or aimed at scientists, I'd be keen as mustard to know about them!

If anyone has opinions on the work of Han, Lee, Wang, & Baldwin (librai fact checking automation - github.com/Libr-AI/OpenFactVer ) I'd be all ears too.

Please feel free to boost this if you think answers might interest you.

You are absolutely spot-on, of course.

I read a marvellous account of this somewhere and I didn't write it down. Very possibly in a medical handbook of ADHD! I will push a message if I am lucky enough to encounter it again.

It pertained to sequencing (in the conscious mind) of perceived events including thoughts.

Great stuff!

(Ironically, they believed the mind is the only place we have any semblance of control!)

No worries.

Illusion is a metaphor.

Just like how we think we pass through time, rather than being in all the moments separately; before, now, in the future - time as we perceive it exists because the moments are perceived in sequence.

But like the use of the word "illusion", language is a clumsy tool, and it's hard to lay some things out in words.

Well, also its possible the folks actually thought they meant illusion, in which case you're right and they're silly. Send em to me for reducation.

I have a general understanding of #stoicism . I watched some youtube videos that explain the concept, some that discuss the well-known #stoics, and read #marcusaurelius 'Meditations'.
One thing that bothers me about stoicism: it seems that the stoics operate(d) from the base assumption that there exists a bigger plan, whether gods, nature, or otherwise, even if not explained. Science generally assumes that natural selection is nature's plan.
So how do you reconcile #stoicism with this?

So think about this.

The Roman Empire that #MarcusAurelius ruled so ably no longer exists ...

... but the philosophy he inherited from #Epictetus and codified for the ages (a #philosophy powerfully described in this video) endures.

"You could leave life right now. Let that determine what you do and say and think."

Modern day Stoics are still perceived as soulless, joyless automatons. The reason behind the perception is because Stoics don't chase happiness for the sake of happiness.

We chase *purpose*.

Author Peter Singer said, "Real fulfillment is more likely to be found in working for some other end. Hence, these philosophers claim, if we want to lead a happy life, we should not seek happiness directly, but should find a larger purpose in life, outside ourselves."

More specifically, be of service to others. Volunteer at your local food bank. Work with the youth. Be an outstanding husband/wife/mother/father/partner.

"[...] from all this hard work came pleasure and pride and satisfaction"

It could be said that we are seeking Stoic Joy, through hard work and purpose.

Chasing material things will never fulfill you. They will run through your fingers like sand sooner rather than later. Find your purpose and run with it.

Don't chase happiness for the sake of happiness. Seek Stoic Joy instead- https://knowledgeknot.enmesh.nohost.me/notice/APoIudViGXrGX3Bcg4

This year I've decided I will look into the #Stoics especially #Epictetus. This is from his "The Enchiridion".

I figure, why go to the East when the West also has Zen like offerings that more naturally fit Western mindsets? Besides, for me it is going back to my cultural roots.
