A word of caution about #DNS4EU.

Even if the service is operated in the #EU, and is sold to the public as progress for European "#sovereignty"; and even as you may celebrate its offering of "free protection" from #malware, #phishing and undesirable #advertising: Take a look at the 2022 tender document for the project.

Right from the start, it was clearly stated that the DNS entries will be censored:

»Lawful filtering: Filtering of URLs leading to illegal content based on legal requirements applicable in the EU or in national jurisdictions (e.g. based on court orders), in full compliance with EU rules.« (p. 15)

Now think of European countries that have very peculiar opinions about #LGBTQ+ rights, #copyright, etc.

What do you think will be enabled by a clause like »or in national jurisdictions (e.g. based on court orders)«?

It's not just an upcoming commercialization of the service that should worry you.

The management strategies discussed specifically emphasize efficient use of water and energy and do not recommend asinine (but popular) heat management strategies like installing misters and industrial fans in the chicken coop.

Rancho de la Libertad · Chicken Allies in the Mojave DesertChickens, right? Everyone's favorite "entry level" farm animal. Us, too. But despite reading a plethora of books on chicken husbandry and integrating chickens into homesteads, permaculture gardens, and holistic management schemes, we had no clue what we were doing when we brought our first flock home. In part, our cluelessness

ETHZ and EPFL announced the release of a Large Language Model (LLM) developed on public infrastructure: Trained on the “Alps” supercomputer at the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS) in 8B and 70B parameters configurations, using open-source training data, respecting web crawling opt-outs during data acquisition, and natively fluent in over 1000 languages. Quoting: "The model will be fully open: source code and weights will be publicly available, and the training data will be transparent and reproducible".

I don't know how good it's going to be, but if true for me this is the real definition of "open-source" in AI (not the ridiculous, corporate-promiscuous definition by the Open Source Initiative).

“It is vital that in marking these events, we do so in a way that respects the backgrounds & cultures of everyone who share these neighborhoods,” Chief Constable Jon Boutcher said in a statement. “There is no place for hate or intimidation — only space for celebration that welcomes & celebrates not divides.”
