With news of the death of Francis, the first Jesuit to be elected Pope, I thought I’d share this photo of a statue of Ignatius, the founder of Francis’ order. Taken outside the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola in NYC. More personal thoughts in the alt text.

Ignatius founded the order of the Society of Jesus — the Jesuits — to which I (sometimes unwillingly) feel a connection, since I attended a Jesuit school for many years of my childhood. I’m no longer religious, for many reasons, but I still wrestle with that upbringing and try to untangle the good from the bad.

Pope Francis, who passed away this morning, was the first Jesuit to be elected to the position. He wasn’t perfect by any means, and the Church he led continues to be a VERY problematic institution, but I appreciated his gestures towards inclusivity (insufficient though they were) and his speaking up for climate justice, for uplifting the poor, and for ending the genocide in Gaza. I hope his successor continues further down that path.

Voici mon système d'entreposage entre les symposiums. Je fais de plus en plus petit car je manque de place mais aussi, c'est difficile de trimballer des grosses sculptures lourdes en acier. Comme mon prochain symposium est à la maison, je me permet un peu plus de sculptures de jardins. Une est en cours... à suivre!

Sur la photo un coin ensoleillé dans une maison. Une porte patio d'un côté et une grande fenêtre de l'autre. Dans le coin, un petit bureau de travail rempli de créations en métal. Hi this is RiG! RiG stands on four tapered inox legs holding up a light module.
RiG feeds the module with power throug white silicone wires. Power that RiG got from a black power cable with cord switch. When turned on RiG will brighten your day, or anyway the surface RiG stands on.

Visited Margate today and made sure to get there at low tide so I could walk out (and touch) the #AnthonyGormley ‘Another time’ sculpture.

Then we visited a few more times to see it consumed by the incoming tide.

Long-legged creatures don otherwordly masks in sculptures by Bali-based artist Spencer Hansen, whose work explores identity and connection through a cast of uncanny characters. Using primarily natural, found, and recycled materials like wood, metal, bone, plant fibers, and ceramic, he draws inspiration from surrounding environment and frequent travels. Originally from Idaho, he relocated to Bali where he built a workshop that houses studios and live-work space for a team of skilled artisans who help to bring the pieces to life.
