Viral paper on black plastic kitchen utensils earns second correction, basically invalidating panic.

The reference dose for toxicity was off by a literal order of magnitude: 42K ng/per day when the actual number is 420K ng/day. And the exposure/intake calculation also off by an order of magnitude: originally calculated at 34.7K ng/day, but revised to 7900 ng/day.

So from a nearly complete toxic exposure to a 2% of toxicity exposure.

Colluding Rhino Poachers Exploit Space–Time Variation In Opportunity And Risk

“[R]esearch analysing over 500 rhino poaching incidents and exploring what these patterns reveal about the behaviours of poachers, rangers, and rhinos. [Their] study highlights concerning evidence of criminal syndicate infiltration, space–time targeting by poachers, and how behavioural insights can inform effective responses—from targeted dehorning to bolstering ranger resilience…”

Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare reveals it was impacted by Cerner/Legacy Oracle cyberattack:

wtxl.com/news/local-news/tmh-r

In April, Union Health System in Indiana notified HHS that almost 263,000 of its patients had been affected by the incident.

So far, these are the only two reports I've found related to the incident. But I am betting there are a lot more we don't yet know about.

I haven't found any threat actor or group claiming responsibility for the attack or leaking any data from it.

@tpherndon I have these fancy new nasal sprays that are supposed to /help/ (in the sense that they lower your risk a lot if you're in a medium-risk situation and aren't doing a ton of breathing through your mouth) so I was intending to experiment with them somewhat this year.

But like, an hour-ish in a potentially well ventilated restaurant space vs 4-ish hours in an enclosed hotel room…hmm. #RiskAssessment

I'm going to take advantage of the current #eruption on Mt #Etna to discuss some of the challenges of #modelling #lava flows. Buckle up (or just silence me) because this is going to be a long thread.

First of all, why do we want to model lava flows? The answer most definitely isn't «because we can», since —as I'm going to explain momentarily— we actually cannot. Still having an idea about how lava flows and sets in place is a powerful tool for the assessment (and possibly mitigation) of the associated #hazard and #risk: if we can tell how lava flows, we can tell which areas are going to be reached by the lava, and hopefully also improve the design of tactical and strategic actions that can be taken to minimize the damage.

(Of course, whether or not those actions will then be taken is an entirely different matter, but that's mostly politics, not science.)
