The predictions and news are bad for the Rio Grande Valley and Albuquerque. (Also Las Cruces)

As John Fleck says "We will learn a great deal this year."

=========================================

We are heading into a remarkable year on New Mexico’s Middle Rio Grande. Here are some critical factors:

1. The preliminary April 1 forecast from the NRCS is for 27 percent of median April – July runoff at Otowi, the key measurement gage for New Mexico’s Middle Rio Grande.

2. Current reservoir storage above us is basically nothing.

3. Reclamation’s most recent forecast model runs suggest flow through Albuquerque peaked in February. It usually peaks in May.

I was wondering what would be an appropriate photo for the last day of the year. I came up with this image of a dirt road crossing a narrow bridge to a rocky shore with storm clouds building. Only way forward is across. Seemed appropriate to me. How about you?

When half of the major #rivers across the planet are experiencing extreme low-water conditions, you know this is not just regional #drought. The heating from #ClimateChange has entirely messed with the water cycle, so when extreme storms hit these systems, there is erosion and severe damage. Water is a precious resource that cannot be forgotten. #Amazon #Mississippi #Ganges #Mekong #Colorado #Nile #Mackenzie #Vistula #Danube #Yangtze #Po #Paraná #RioGrande #Indus #Murray

The Guardian · Climate warning as world’s rivers dry up at fastest rate for 30 yearsBy Helena Horton

"Albuquerque, NM – Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District water managers have announced that the public should expect minimal flows in the Albuquerque Reach of the Rio Grande. There is potential for some of the river to dry in this reach in the coming days or weeks. Water supply to the Middle Rio Grande has decreased precipitously over the past couple of weeks, and without significant inflow from rain events, river conditions are expected to continue to decline."

Hiking Along the Rio Grande in South Texas by Debra Martz This was one of my favorite places for bird-watching in South Texas. It was quiet most of the time with only a handful of other people from time to time. It was so peaceful that it made hearing the birds calling and singing easy. And so beautiful that it's hard to believe this was winter; January 24th, 2018.
