Eastern Redbud, this flowering tree is another plant that I was introduced to later in life. My wife read about them and then talked about them when we drove down to Asheville NC for our single work away from home Covid move. North American #redbud is in the genus Cercis, & the pea family, Fabaceae, & they are a low water-use planting.

"Cercis, usually pronounced sir-siss, is based on kerkis, the Greek word for a weaver’s shuttle. Individual seeds are flat & oval & were seen as resembling a weaver’s shuttle[. Botanical names often refer to things] familiar in 1750, for example weaving [but] little known today."

Chã'-a (Yuki).—The common redbud of the region, a magnificent wide-branching shrub, 8 to 20 feet high, which is conspicuous in early spring for its wealth of small reddish blossoms & in summer & fall for the beauty of its large, thin, kidney-shaped leaves & its abundance of thin, green & red seed pods. It is very common on brushy hillsides & the margins of valleys throughout the district. Both the bark & the wood from the young sprouts are gathered in the fall & used for the strands of some of the finer baskets. They are used either like thread or merely as woof to twine in & out in the so-called twining baskets. The wood is also used for withes in making up the skeletons of some baskets. Baskets made of redbud are very common & are often very pretty, but they are not so durable as those made from roots, especially those of different species of saw grass or Carex. Considerable ingenuity is exercised in the collection & manipulation of the material to produce a varied result. The branches are some- times cut down in winter or early spring so as to insure suitable material for use the next fall. The color of the bark is then slightly red, but this is often changed into a darker red by exposing it to smoke, & is blackened in various ways, as by soaking it in dirty water or in water & ashes, or in a decoction of oak bark to which scraps of old iron have been added. The piece explores how #redbud trees, increasingly common in Toronto due to their popularity with gardeners and a warming climate, are popular with our native #bees but this includes the Eastern carpenter bee (whose range is also expanding with climate change) which comes into conflict with home owners when it drills nests in wood.
