The Complicated Ethics of #RareBook #Collecting: Literary treasures are too often hidden away from the public—but the world of private collecting isn’t all bad. - The Atlantic

theatlantic.com/books/archive/

Not sure it's as complicated as all that 😀 (especially compared with other fields), the more so as it's from a collector and in effect answers its own question (attached). But good to put the issues out there. Also nice that features local collector Lisa Baskin

raffall.comEnter Raffle to Win A Very Unique Copy of STARDUST by Neil Gaiman hosted by LINDA SILLIMAN MILLAR***this book is being raffalled with the permission of the author and the publisher) *** ****THIS IS IMPORTANT BEFORE YOU BUY A TICKET PLEASE READ THE SHIPPING INFORMATION AND RESTRICTIONS**** Hello all of you Neil Gaiman and Lyras Books Fans, It's been a minute since I last raffalled off any books and here I am once again with this superb copy of STARDUST This is copy 1 of 2 anywhere in the world, and as far as I am aware at this point in time the other copy is not available anywhere else in the Universe as is evidenced by the illustrator Charles Vess in the photographs First of all, for those of you who are new to Neil's work but love the chance to win something unique there is some information about both the author and the artist below. Neil needs no introduction really, he is a master of his art second to none! A New York Times bestselling author and creator of books, graphic novels, short stories, film and television for all ages, including Norse Mythology, Neverwhere, Coraline, The Graveyard Book, The Ocean at the End of the Lane, The View from the Cheap Seats, and the Sandman comic series to name but a few! Phew! And according to Lyras Books the artist on this unique copy of STARDUST Charles Vess has been drawing ever since he could hold a crayon and crawl to the nearest wall. His long list of accomplishments include the Stardust illustrated novel with Neil Gaiman (of course I'm referring to the copy that you could once, long ago, buy from Lyras Books), cover art for Marvel, DC, Tor and Subterranean Press as well as many illustrated books and graphic novels for which he has won four World Fantasy, three Chesley, two Locus, a Mythopoeic and two Will Eisner awards. Charles’ art has been featured in many gallery and museum exhibitions across the nation, including two exhibitions in New York City: “Modern Fairy Tales” (with Michael Kaluta) at the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art, and “Spectrum: The best in Contemporary Fantastic Art” at the Museum of American Illustration at the Society of Illustrators. His work has also been shown in Paris, Spain, Portugal, Italy and the UK. If you had been lucky enough to buy a copy of any of the other three editions that were available from Lyras Books in 2020 then you were very, very lucky. This book is a whole different ballgame! As you can see from the final photograph Charles Vess reiterates that he was sent ''two volumes of an unbound edition of their Stardust already adorned with 4 unique drawings by Neil himself. I was told by Richard Tong (that's Mr. Lyra to you) that the books would be auctioned off for an unspecified charity'' Well here on offer is one of those two copies, I have no idea where the other copy currently is I believe only Richard Tong and Neil himself may know where the additional copy is! This copy measures the same as the Standard Edition of Stardust, but, this copy is quarter bound in leather rather than cloth. It has a slightly different slipcase, Charles Vess has signed EVERY illustration in the book, Charles has also drawn a further four pencil drawings and Neil has done a further four ink drawings! These are more than just additional little doodles on this particular book and this book should be considered as a serious addition to and fine and rare book collector, however as it is only priced at £20 per ticket and only 2000 tickets are available, even mere mortals can have a 1 in 2000 chance at winning this amazing book, and the more tickets you buy the higher the chance of winning becomes. This book, as per all previous books, will support non-referral foodbanks up and down the country such as John Lyons Carntyne and Riddrie Non-Referral Foodbank a project which I have been involved with for a few years now, Warwick Proud Welfare Care Services whom I have also come to support, support for homelessness, and support wholly for volunteer led charities such as The Biscuit Fund - https://www.biscuitfund.org/ My own project Give a Kid a Coat for Christmas which I have now been running for a number of years, not all in that order and there are a few smaller charities I regularly support mainly on Twitter/X to name but a few. There are currently 4.2 Million, LET THAT SINK IN for a minute, 4.2 million children currently living in poverty the UK according to The Child Poverty Action Group with many adults going without food in order to feed their children which is in the 21st century an utter disgrace. Every single time you buy a raffall ticket and enter this competition you will be supporting one of the above charities please feel free to buy as many tickets as you would like and can afford! Now onto the important and boring bits! ****SHIPPING AND COSTS**** Usually I am happy to ship to anywhere in the World, however this year will be different, there is so much conflict going on and this is such a valuable book with so many charities relying on the funds raised from it. ****Shipping will be done via Transglobal Express and will be PAID FOR BY THE WINNER***THIS IS NON-NEGOTIABLE**** I WILL ONLY SHIP TO THE FOLLOWING COUNTRIES United Kingdom United States Canada Australia Most of Europe but NOT UKRAINE (or the surrounding areas that may be affected by the conflict) I do understand that this may be disappointing for some of you but with so many conflict zones in the World I just cannot take the risk of this book being lost especially when so many charities will be relying on funds.

Every time I teach about books or take students to a rare book room, I have to explain this

For #RareBook #Librarians, It’s Gloves Off. Seriously. When handling rare #books, experts say that bare, just-cleaned hands are best. Why won’t the public believe them? New York Times

1) The arrogance of ignorance
2) As #library colleagues tell me, tv reinforces stupid ideas, puts pressure on tv presenters to use gloves, in order to avoid inane criticism

Moved to a server that made more sense. re- #introductions !

I am an Assistant Professor of #InformationStudies #iSchool at #UCLA. I am also director of California Rare Book School (calrbs.org), a continuing education program for #librarians, #rarebook enthusiasts, and people interested in #museums. I work a great deal internationally and am a #Fulbright specialist that works with libraries, museums, and archives in Kosovo.

Some research and teaching interests include: #bookhistory #bibliography #libraries #internationallibrarianship #specialcollections #rarebooks #finepress #printingpress #ucla #publishing #literacy #classification #knowledgeorganization #ko #biodiversity #pedagogy #teaching #academia #writing #travel #traveling

Outside of the that, I love to #cook, #barbecue, watch reality television, raise my #AustralianShepherd, etc. I am also a letterpress printer and enjoy making all sorts of #books.

So I see that everyone's offering a little personal #introduction and I might as well do the same!

I am currently a DAM #Librarian for a large corporate entity, but my past LIS lives have included #rarebook cataloguing, #bookselling, physical archival processing for small historical orgs, and social media for #archives.

Other than that, I like to make mini #zines, construct weird felt #embroidery #crafts, and write pithy reviews for the dozens and dozens of #kdramas I watch.
