For Lecky, the ethical question we should be asking isnt whether institutions should acquire rare books #nstead of collectors, but what happens when “a private owner owns something that no one knows that they have.” Lecky, like many others in the trade, works to dispel myths about how private collections work. Private collections tend to be temporary and books often jump between hands, but for the time that a collector owns a book, in my view, they should make efforts to share it. “Most collectors don’t think of it as possession but caretaking,” Lecky said. “They’re a piece of the chain in the provenance, not the end of it.” Historically, private collectors have formed the foundations of institutions. “There are entire libraries and museums that were created by collectors,” Barbara Heritage, the director of collections, exhibitions, and scholarly initiatives at the University of Virginia’s Rare Book School, told me—the Morgan Library & Museum; the Getty Research Institute; the Folger Shakespeare Library; and the Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens, to name a few.
Many rare books, manuscripts, and items in the collections at these institutions are donated by or purchased from private collectors. In other cases, a donor supplies the funds for an institution to make general or specific acquisitions. If you've visited the permanent “Polonsky Exhibition of the New York Public Library’s Treasures,” you might have seen one-of- a-kind items on rotation, such as an early manuscript draft of Oscar Wilde’s 7he Importance of Being Earnest, a lock of Mary Shelley’s hair, and a page from the manuscript of an unpublished chapter of 7he Autobiography of Malcolm X. These pieces were “acquired through the generosity of” a donor or were donated by a collector.
Collectors tend to donate or sell their collections to institutions if they don’t put them back into the marketplace via auction houses or rare-book sellers. “Collecting isn't mere shopping,” Heritage said. “The best collecting requires vision, passion, knowledge, and creativity—and, above all, persistence.” Collecting, for Heritage, has the capacity to be a form of advocacy through the creation of knowledge and the ability to tie together strands of knowledge that otherwise couldn’t be done unless one has a lifelong devotion to a particular subject. Some collectors have honed niche collections that have since been deposited in libraries (either wholly or partially). Walter O. Evans collected Black artwork and literature that now constitute mainstay collections—such as the Walter O. Evans Collection of Frederick Douglass and Douglass Family Papers and the Walter O. Evans collection of James Baldwin—at Yale’s Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library. The Douglass papers in Evans’s collection have been digitized so that scholars, students, and the public can access them.

Neil needs no introduction really, he is a master of his art second to none! A New York Times bestselling author and creator of books, graphic novels, short stories, film and television for all ages, including Norse Mythology, Neverwhere, Coraline, The Graveyard Book, The Ocean at the End of the Lane, The View from the Cheap Seats, and the Sandman comic series to name but a few! Phew! And according to Lyras Books the artist on this unique copy of STARDUST Charles Vess has been drawing ever since he could hold a crayon and crawl to the nearest wall. His long list of accomplishments include the Stardust illustrated novel with Neil Gaiman (of course I'm referring to the copy that you could once, long ago, buy from Lyras Books), cover art for Marvel, DC, Tor and Subterranean Press as well as many illustrated books and graphic novels for which he has won four World Fantasy, three Chesley, two Locus, a Mythopoeic and two Will Eisner awards. Charles’ art has been featured in many gallery and museum exhibitions across the nation, including two exhibitions in New York City: “Modern Fairy Tales” (with Michael Kaluta) at the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art, and “Spectrum: The best in Contemporary Fantastic Art” at the Museum of American Illustration at the Society of Illustrators. His work has also been shown in Paris, Spain, Portugal, Italy and the UK. If you had been lucky enough to buy a copy of any of the other three editions that were available from Lyras Books in 2020 then you were very, very lucky. This book is a whole different ballgame! As you can see from the final photograph Charles Vess reiterates that he was sent ''two volumes of an unbound edition of their Stardust already adorned with 4 unique drawings by Neil himself. I was told by Richard Tong (that's Mr. Lyra to you) that the books would be auctioned off for an unspecified charity'' Well here on offer is one of those two copies, I have no idea where the other copy currently is I believe only Richard Tong and Neil himself may know where the additional copy is! This copy measures the same as the Standard Edition of Stardust, but, this copy is quarter bound in leather rather than cloth. It has a slightly different slipcase, Charles Vess has signed EVERY illustration in the book, Charles has also drawn a further four pencil drawings and Neil has done a further four ink drawings! These are more than just additional little doodles on this particular book and this book should be considered as a serious addition to and fine and rare book collector, however as it is only priced at £20 per ticket and only 2000 tickets are available, even mere mortals can have a 1 in 2000 chance at winning this amazing book, and the more tickets you buy the higher the chance of winning becomes. So I see that everyone's offering a little personal #introduction and I might as well do the same!

I am currently a DAM #Librarian for a large corporate entity, but my past LIS lives have included #rarebook cataloguing, #bookselling, physical archival processing for small historical orgs, and social media for #archives.

Other than that, I like to make mini #zines, construct weird felt #embroidery #crafts, and write pithy reviews for the dozens and dozens of #kdramas I watch.
