Every time I teach about books or take students to a rare book room, I have to explain this
For #RareBook #Librarians, It’s Gloves Off. Seriously. When handling rare #books, experts say that bare, just-cleaned hands are best. Why won’t the public believe them? New York Times
1) The arrogance of ignorance
2) As #library colleagues tell me, tv reinforces stupid ideas, puts pressure on tv presenters to use gloves, in order to avoid inane criticism
Got an awesome new addition to my #BrandonSanderson #RareBook collection yesterday! A pristine #AdvanceReaderCopy of "Elantris", with the original publisher introduction letter tucked inside!

The crude but hilarious and charming woodcuts in this spelling book are by English artist Joseph Crawhall II.
This little gem from 1884 (first edition) is a great example of the chap book revival led by Crawhall and The Leadenhall Press.
I love the silliness and artistic freedom of this.
The porcupine from Antonio Tempesta's "Nova Raccolta de li Animali piu curiosi del Mondo" (Rome, 1650) has a five- o'clock shadow and really sums up the vibe

Moved to a server that made more sense. re- #introductions !
I am an Assistant Professor of #InformationStudies #iSchool at #UCLA. I am also director of California Rare Book School (calrbs.org), a continuing education program for #librarians, #rarebook enthusiasts, and people interested in #museums. I work a great deal internationally and am a #Fulbright specialist that works with libraries, museums, and archives in Kosovo.
Some research and teaching interests include: #bookhistory #bibliography #libraries #internationallibrarianship #specialcollections #rarebooks #finepress #printingpress #ucla #publishing #literacy #classification #knowledgeorganization #ko #biodiversity #pedagogy #teaching #academia #writing #travel #traveling
Outside of the that, I love to #cook, #barbecue, watch reality television, raise my #AustralianShepherd, etc. I am also a letterpress printer and enjoy making all sorts of #books.
So I see that everyone's offering a little personal #introduction and I might as well do the same!
I am currently a DAM #Librarian for a large corporate entity, but my past LIS lives have included #rarebook cataloguing, #bookselling, physical archival processing for small historical orgs, and social media for #archives.
Other than that, I like to make mini #zines, construct weird felt #embroidery #crafts, and write pithy reviews for the dozens and dozens of #kdramas I watch.
Also, by way of introduction, I am director of California Rare Book School (#calrbs), a continuing education program for #librarians, #rarebook enthusiasts, and people interested in #museums that is operated out of #ucla Department of #InformationStudies. We are dedicated to #SocialJustice, #ethics, and #global approaches to #BookHistory and #bibliography. 2023 course list is published on December 1, 2022.
