#Trump’s #budget proposal, though not yet formally submitted to Congress, would eviscerate a long list of #planetary & #astronomical missions, including the next major #NASA #space #telescope & the agency’s goal of bringing samples of #Mars back to Earth to search for signs of ancient life.

NASA’s #astrophysics budget would take a huge hit, dropping from ~$1.5B to $487M. Planetary #science would see a drop from $2.7B to $1.9B. #EarthScience would drop from ~$2.2B to $1.033B.

"Moonquakes Surprisingly Common" is #NASA #astronomy picture of the day (#APOD) - Seismometers left by Apollo crews continued to transmit #quake data for years. Data from max sensor network installation in 1972 until 1977 shows moonquakes are more common than earthquakes. One theory about why says that could be caused by tidal influence from Earth's gravity. Analyses of seismometers left on the moon during the Apollo moon landings reveal a surprising number of moonquakes occurring within 100 kilometers of the surface. In fact, 62 moonquakes were detected in data recorded between 1972 and 1977. Many of these moonquakes are not only strong enough to move furniture in a lunar apartment, but the stiff rock of the moon continues to vibrate for many minutes, significantly longer than the softer rock earthquakes on Earth. The cause of the moonquakes remains unknown, but a leading hypothesis include tidal gravity from -- and relative heating by -- our Earth. Regardless of the source, future moon dwellings need to be built to withstand the frequent shakings. Time Travel: obscure & cryptic little ad in Artforum Magazine from 45 years ago proves more relevant today than back in 1980.

#Scientific #research, #spiritual #quest, or #conceptual #art, it's an invitation to make contact with Time Travelers — or Visitors from the Future(s) — at what some call a landing reception. Today, the ongoing work of The Krononaut Moon Project continues at full steam on #Mastodon & #Fediverse.

The historic ad appeared in the magazine's 1980 Jan issue, announcing a gathering to occur two years later on 1982 Mar 09, inviting #Krononauts or #TimeTravelers to beam down to #Baltimore #MD #US. The hundreds of attendees at the night's festivities were documented by a #NYTimes #newspaper reporter. Later, others would organize their own inter-dimensional meet-ups in #Perth #AU, #MIT #US, and #Cambridge #UK. (All were landing receptions of type-1.0. The message is that it's inviting readers to a "reception" or "landing party" for #TimeTravelers, or #Krononauts, that was scheduled for 2 years after the publication date of the magazine. The ad also includes phone numbers and a PO box which are all long-defunct now. The irony / humor / concept is that we are looking at this from 45 years in its future, just as real Time Travelers will one day look at it from a more distant future(s), and they could elect to travel back to #Baltimore #MD #US on 1982 Mar 09. This kind of documentation (now on #Mastodon & #Fediverse) is crucial to the successful operation of the experiment.
