I thought "Oh this is a really pretty pigeon!" Seen at the ruins of a downtown building in Miami Arizona four years ago right about now. I even thought it would be so much nicer if a bird like this was hanging out around our house instead of the boring old gray birds who are most insistent on laying eggs right by the front door, despite the $40 "bird spikes" my son thought would work to deter them. In the process of looking up a bird ID, I first came upon "Rock dove," and ooh, that sounded great to me. But alas, turns out the majority of sources just ID it as a rock pigeon, one of the most common birds in North America. #Bird #Pigeon #MiamiArizona

PS. These birds are really LOUD and the bass coo sounds resonate so you can't ignore them with your house shut up.

"There are a number of different living creatures - but not us - who can sense magnetic fields, and they use the Earth's intrinsic geomagnetic field as a navigation aid. This has been seen in bacteria and other microorganisms all the way to birds, who use the magnetic field to do their long-range migrations. You can even see disruptions in bird locations after a big sunspot-induced geomagnetic storm!"

"Any explanation will also have to account for some other odd experimental facts: birds don't seem to notice or care whether or not they're navigating by a South or North polarity. Instead, they (.) have more of a sense of whether they're heading towards the equator or towards either pole. (.) Tthird oddity: birds can magnetonavigate under light wavelengths from near UV up to about 565 nm (yellow-green), but under yellow, orange, and red light they are disoriented."
