The librarian book hunters who roamed the world and used dubious means to secure scrolls. The visiting Roman who killed a cat and was immediately murdered by an angry mob. Timons, disdainfully referred to the devoted copyists as a ‘nest of caged scribbblers’. The broader project was to obtain an original or copy of every piece of writing in the known world.
