This is a hack for using BIC ballpoints pens on vintage pen plotters. Note that this model is highly experimental, more experimentation is need (an #OpenSCAD file is available). #3dprinting #penplotter

The original circular HP pen plotter organizer boxes have foam dividers for the pens. Now the foam is turning to goo. I created a new insert to replace the foam and hold 40 pen plotter pens. Should fit the short or tall circular pen box.

I've been trying to get this style of plotter image to work since before 2012: representing brightness with isolines of a function with higher gradients where the image should be darker so the lines are closer
After getting something close but not very good a couple of months ago in the last two days I saw a post on Reddit with a new technique to try (fast marching method) and yesterday I got a process working in Python. Over 13 years and it finally took a day

I loved discovering #PenPlotter art collections recently, and how much art and ingenuity goes into it. Seeing one set up by a lady at #DOESliverpool in recent years and buying her art, got me thinking creatively around this medium. I'm especially looking forward to writing code that generates nice maths-rich work.

Hallo #PenPlotter community. I'm aiming to scratch together, out of junk & spares if necessary, an affordable A3 or larger XY pen plotter, that I can feed jobs to from my imagination.
Not scared of electronics or code, just don't want to reinvent too many wheels where avoidable.
While I read all I can about this format of drawing robot, any recommendations to get started would be very welcome.

Details and production
Taking a break from all that's going on to share this month's print set. I worked with a much lighter weight paper than usual which put limits on how thick you could apply the pen ink. Still lots of layers and the gesso pulls up layers from the bottom.
I'm looking to pick up a HP Draftmaster II, RX, MX, RX+, or MX+ pen plotter. Do you have one or know someone that does and wants to part with it? I'm in the US Mid-Atlantic region.

Today I’m starting a big plot on the @bantamtools ArtFrame Panorama, a monster of a plotter with a 24” x 72” plot area. Excited to see a plot that is as tall as I am!

When viewed close up, it’s an abstract series of modulated horizontal lines with hatch marks in them. From a distance, the line work collapses into a recognizable portrait (at least for me).
I’ve long admired the old ALDUS logo from the early PageMaker days on the Mac. I’ve used that style to create a #PenPlotter rainbow portrait of Alan Turing for pride month.

Back on my servo bullshit again: I found a brushless servo that was under £30 so I thought I'd have a go to see if it might be a #penplotter option for increased durability
