Paris Bike Boom Leads to Steep Drop in Air Pollution

"The French city’s air quality has improved dramatically in the past 20 years, coinciding with a growth in cycling...Between 2005 and 2024, levels of nitrogen dioxide and fine particulate matter — two of the most harmful pollutants to human health — have been slashed by 50% and 55%, respectively.”

"City leaders including Mayor Anne Hidalgo have been making a concerted effort to pedestrianize parts of the city, improve bike infrastructure, and promote active transportation in the French capital."

@wsslmn : agreed, provided that, at the very least, all of the extra payed taxes is spent on reducing the price of public transport (more asphalt will not even be needed if only the rich can drive gasoline wasting cars).

Besides, in NL it is way to easy yo register a dummy company and obtain enormous tax reductions when buying and driving a monstertruck "businesswise".

They're not only a PITA when driving; they often block part of small streets *and* sidewalks - often making the life of people in wheelchairs even harder. Recently I nearly hit my head on a huge side mirror of a RAM1500.

A new data set called OS-CONNECT maps sidewalks and other pedestrian paths statewide, from Forks on the Olympic Peninsula to Clarkston in the southeast. Paris residents to vote on making 500 more streets pedestrian

"Parisians vote in a referendum on Sunday to decide whether an extra 500 of the city's streets should be pedestrianised and greened, in a new push by the French capital's left-leaning town hall to curb car usage and improve air quality."

"This is the third such referendum in Paris in as many years, following a 2023 vote that approved a ban on e-scooters, and a decision last year to triple parking charges for large SUVs.For the past 25 years we've gradually been reclaiming public space for pedestrian traffic, for gentle traffic, and with 'garden streets', to create lungs within neighbourhoods, the places where we live."

"If approved, Sunday's referendum will eliminate 10,000 extra parking spots in Paris, adding to the 10,000 removed since 2020. The capital's two million residents will be consulted on which streets will become pedestrian areas. If Parisians vote in favour of the proposal, the 500 streets to be vegetated will bring the total of these "green lungs" to nearly 700, just over one-tenth of the capital's streets."

Bellingen, Hyde St.: We like speeding trucks and parking, parking and parking...

At least turn Church St. from a car park into 'green infrastructure'

@crow time city of #edinburgh Council realised the reality of the situation and banned bicycles from public parks.

Unfortunately, most councillors either cycle, drive or use the bus. Pedestrians in Edinburgh can whistle.

Especially as there is a particularly loud and active #cycling lobby who instead of getting road speeds down to an acceptable level prefer to invade the pavement and parks for their “safety”
No regard however for the safety of #pedestrians.

The #European Commission reports a 3% decrease in #EU road fatalities in 2024, with approximately 19,800 deaths, 600 fewer than in 2023. While this marks progress, it is still too slow to meet the EU's target of halving road deaths by 2030. The reduction varies significantly across member states, with countries like #Belgium, #Denmark, and #Poland on track to meet the target, while road fatalities have risen in #Ireland and #Estonia. Rural roads remain the most dangerous, with men and older adults being the most affected groups. Vulnerable road users, especially #pedestrians and #cyclists, account for a large proportion of #urban fatalities. The EU aims for a 50% reduction in road deaths and serious injuries by 2030, with the long-term goal of zero fatalities by 2050.

The deadly 3,000kg car bloat trend

Australians are obsessed with SUVs and huge utes, but experts say they are making our roads deadlier

"Also in recent years, Australia has spectacularly failed at its mission of bringing down road deaths and serious injuries. Speed – and their proclivity to be driven faster – and overall height make larger vehicles far more likely to kill or cause serious injury when hitting pedestrians, cyclists, motorbikes and smaller cars."

"Newstead warns how this mentality can lead to an arms race to larger cars for those wanting to bolster their own safety. Crucially, if a driver can’t make eye contact with a pedestrians, “they are going to drive as though they aren’t there”"

Loud vehicles cause harm to #children, #pedestrians and #bicyclists on a daily basis, yet #TinaKotek and her administration look the other way out of fear of Harley owners, who can "customize" without regard to those exposed. Nevermind the #tunercars.

There are vehicles, with no #DEQ inspection, yet they abuse those condemned to use public throughways with egregious, otherwise illegal in a *workplace*, noise levels.

#Noise level laws flaunted by via exception:

As a full time cyclist, I'd like to understand why sports #road #cycling leads people to completely ignore road rules, traffic signals and other road users (including #pedestrians). Is it pack mentality? Is it just a complete disregard for others? I don't know. Is this just an #Australian thing?

Just apart from the negative impact that it has on other road users, it enables motorists to label/other all #bike riders as inconsiderate rule breakers, making cycling less safe for the rest of us.

It was exhausting, but I spent over two hours trudging through slippery snow to go vote. It sure would be nice if sidewalks and intersections were passable. Good thing my hip is ok these days or I would've hurt myself for sure. A few years ago, I wouldn't have been able to make it even a block. But my voting is done, and hopefully it stops the conservatives from continuing to plunder everything good left in Ontario. #OnPoli #OntarioElection2025 #pedestrians #accessibility
