Ancient papyrus unveils spectacular Roman-era corruption and forgery A recent study by an international team of researchers has revealed a 2,000-year-old corruption scandal, offering a rare glimpse into Roman judicial practices in the provinces of Judea and Arabia during a period of social and political upheaval. The study, published in the journal Tyche, was conducted by scholars from the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the University of Vienna, and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The document is a Greek-language papyrus spanning 133 lines and is the longest of its kind ever found in the Judean Desert. The papyrus, most likely written by Roman prosecutors, documents preparations for a judicial case involving two defendants, Gedaliah (also known as Gadalias) and Saul (Saulos)...

It tells of warring librarians & catrocide: The book digs into the interesting details surrounding the Great Library of Alexandria and its rival, the Library of Pergamum. There are many juicy details here, such as the thwarted attempts to secure Aristotle’s Treatises. Neleus buried them in a cellar and offered only fakes or minor texts. The librarian book hunters who roamed the world and used dubious means to secure scrolls. The visiting Roman who killed a cat and was immediately murdered by an angry mob. Timons, disdainfully referred to the devoted copyists as a ‘nest of caged scribbblers’. The broader project was to obtain an original or copy of every piece of writing in the known world. Un papyrus découvert en Égypte à Philadelphia, fin 2022, a livré 98 lignes de fragments de deux tragédies d'Euripide, "Polyidos" et "Ino". 76 lignes étaient auparavant inconnues. C'est la plus importante découverte de fragments d'Euripide depuis les années 1960. Une édition scientifique du texte paraîtra dans une revue savante en août.

Die Bibliothek, Sinnbild intellektueller Ordnung; Ein Zufluchtsort, in stetiger Auflösung begriffen und doch Symbol der Hoffnung - falls es diese heute noch zu geben vermag.
