The Masked School Library Tech
The latest AI teaching tool essentially takes the teacher out of the lesson. Upload PDFs and articles, it creates a podcast. Kids listen to the podcast. Questions? Kid raises their hand, podcast stops and waits for the question then answers them. Podcast does not sound like a machine either. It’s very lifelike and sounds very natural.
Why are teachers embracing tools that can be used to make them obsolete? Because there are a heck of a lot of teachers drinking the cool aid.
#OntEd #Education #OnEd

The Masked School Library Tech
The last week running up to any lengthy break from school is filled with staff asking “what are you doing for the break”. Even after 10 years, most are still surprised that I will be working for some of it. “But what do you do when no one is here?” they ask… catch up on all the stuff I can’t do when I’m doing all the forward facing parts of my job. The state of schools today is that students' rights are violated by their fellow classmates and school staff. Students are left to fend for themselves. They try to call someone for help, their phone is confiscated. They try to leave, they can be threatened and charged. If you're disabled your actively terrorized. For me, it was hell on Earth. /5

This government has also promoted discrimination in #schools. In 2024, they required schools to report on whether teachers think their students are paying attention. Only students know what goes on inside their head. The negative impact with be disproportionately felt by #ADHD and other disabled students.
They are also breaching student privacy requiring schools to report to parents when students are caught vaping, without regard to the impact on student safety. /4

They also haven't done many things they should've done. Despite strong opposition before forming government, the PCs refuse to change #Ontario's compulsory school attendance. Bullying and harassment have exploded in our schools, but they crack down on cell phones. When being made aware of professional misconduct by school administrators, this government stands by and does nothing. Their inaction has made schools dangerous places that kids aren't allowed to leave. /3

Since forming government, the PCs have made life immeasurably worse for students. In 2019, they issued a policy that prevented students from recording misconduct during instructional time web.archive.org/web/2021092116. In 2024, the remade the policy to bar some students from using PMDs during the entire school day. They also passed a law to issue secret directives to school boards related to digital technology and information ontario.ca/laws/statute/24e24. /2

Why #DougFord doesn't deserve another chance, #onted edition. 🧵

Before forming government in 2018, the PCs promised that would make our schools positive, interesting, exciting and engaging. Public schools were not in a good place before Ford took power. This government, instead of making them better, has made them worse in almost every way. They betrayed every principle, every moral they claimed to stand for and have thrown our students under the bus.
