Look who is visiting for dinner.
Midnight noticed them first, through the other window. I saw her attentive and investigated. I got to teach her the word "deer."

I got some old issues of "better homes and gardens" for free at the library, and while I'm enjoying looking at these gardens (I particularly like the trellis design in pic 1), all i can think about is how expensive some of this landscaping looks
I want a magazine of solarpunk/dirt farmer/off-gridder/homesteader/diy gardens! Where is it?!? I guess it's here on masto lol.
Does anyone have suggestions for a wooden cutting board that won't grow moldy? I have an outdoor kitchen in a tropical wet climate and every wooden board I've ever used becomes a mold palace pretty quickly.
I use a plastic board now, but I want to eat fewer micro plastics. So if anyone has suggestions (maybe for a particular kind of wood to look for?), I'd be most grateful.
I got a battery powered cooking set that could work on solar energy :3 it takes about 3-5% battery to bake an egg at full power (it should sustain full power for about 30 minutes).
Battery can be had for ~100-180€ (depending on source) and the induction cooker for about 30-40€, an optional matching solar panel costs about 50-100€
These are the solar panels I set on the ground three years ago. They have kept my house toasty warm in the winter and cool in the summer. They keep a pair of rack mounted batteries charged, which acts like a premium 10KWh UPS. They keep the lights on, even during the worst storms that knock out the grid. Also, my utility bills are zero as these are all under my control.
I'm showing you this, because solar can be easy to install and does not require it to be connected to the existing house wiring. At minimum, four panels and an inverter powering a window air conditioner. More panels are nice for when heat is needed in the winter. And of course, charging the EV.

We got our chickens from Poule Pour Tous, a project out of Montbert (Monteverzh) in the Loire-Atlantique that rescues chickens from bad situations.
a (L-R) Harco, a Sussex and a Rousse, they are staying indoors for the next couple days to get used to their new home.

The Evertop: A Low-Power, Off-Grid Solar Gem
When was the last time you saw a computer actually outlast your weekend trip? Enter the Evertop, a portable IBM XT emulator powered by an ESP32 that doesn’t just flirt with low power; it basically lives off the grid.
This machine emulates 1980s PCs, runs DOS, Windows 3.0, and even MINIX, and stays powered for hundreds of hours.

#OffGrid #Homesteading #Rainwater
Strolling through what YT was offering me; I came upon the title and clicked [a genuine click bait]. And I was pleasantly surprised. It turned out to be a very philosophical esposé about the possibility of a self sustained living in a bureaucratic society.
Things like rainwater, compost toilets could be regulated [banned] by a meddling government acting out outdated regulation supposed to keep the law abiding citizens safe.
"They Made Rainwater Collection Illegal — What Comes Next?" [13:07 min]
by Project Paradise [New Zealand]

Quote by PP:
"Apr 12, 2025
Henry David Thoreau, experiments in living free can't be done anywhere in the world, in many places it is illegal. I instal a rainwater fed washing machine and talk about the law.
In some parts of the world, it’s illegal to collect rainwater.
In others, using greywater from your shower to feed your garden is banned.
Composting toilets, tiny houses, and off-grid living are often restricted, heavily regulated, or outright forbidden.
All in the name of safety.
But when survival becomes regulated, you have to ask:
Are these laws protecting us — or protecting a system?
These questions aren’t new. Thinkers and rebels have been asking them for centuries:
"A man is rich in proportion to the number of things which he can afford to let alone."
— Henry David Thoreau
Thoreau’s definition of wealth had nothing to do with possessions — and everything to do with freedom from them. He believed the fewer things you needed, the richer you became.
He also said:
"That government is best which governs least."
Thoreau famously refused to pay taxes that supported slavery and war, and spent a night in jail for it. His essay Civil Disobedience went on to inspire revolutionaries like Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr.
"One has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws."
— Martin Luther King Jr.
"Civil disobedience becomes a sacred duty when the state becomes lawless or corrupt."
— Mahatma Gandhi
These words aren’t just history. They echo loudly today — especially for those who want to live closer to nature, with sovereignty, and on their own terms.
Thankfully, not all places are tightening their grip.
Some are letting go — or at least looking the other way.
Places like Maine, Portugal, parts of New Zealand, British Columbia, and Arizona are becoming more open to off-grid living, tiny homes, permaculture, and homesteading.
Tiny homes are being legalized.
Rainwater harvesting is encouraged.
Composting and solar power are no longer seen as fringe — but as forward-thinking.
Maybe the greatest act of rebellion isn’t protest.
Maybe it’s planting a garden.
Collecting rainwater.
Building a home no bigger than you need.
8 month summary of my leap to offgrid EV life
https://joeyh.name/blog/entry/offgrid_electric_car/
Can anyone advise me on designing an off-grid hot shower? It will be for paying guests, so it should be instant and foolproof to use.
I'm currently thinking to base it on a propane shower unit, drawing water from a butt using a 12v DC pump. Has anyone set up something like this? I have questions!
