Vesce à épis - Vicia cracca L

Photo du 25 juin 2025 sous licence CC-BY-NC-SA. Mes autres photos : #^https://pixelfed.social/dandauge

Dancin' Crows! Two Western Jackdaws (Coloeus monedula) on a branch, with vivid green grass and a few yellow wildflowers in the background. One bird faces left, while the other faces right, standing alert. Both show the species’ characteristic slate-grey nape and cheeks, dark wings and back, and pale, piercing eyes.

Common Moorhen chick (Gallinula chloropus) standing alert on aquatic vegetation. The chick is covered in fluffy black down, with a distinctive red-and-yellow bill and a patch of bare red skin on its forehead. Its oversized feet and legs are visible, adapted for walking on floating vegetation.

Over the past seven months I've been working on improving the support for FreeBSD in OpenJDK, sponsored by the @FreeBSD Foundation.

Test summary

==============================

When I started on this project, we had about 100 failing Hotspot tests on FreeBSD, in addition to around 40 in the rest of the JDK. Getting below 10 in total (on x86_64) feels like a significant milestone, and worthy of a bit of celebration! :party_popper:

It's been an interesting, and very educational ride. Some of those tests were pretty easy wins, but some required delving deep into the internals of both OpenJDK and FreeBSD, as well as getting acquainted with the basics of the ARM architecture and instruction set. (Remembering how fascinated I was when the Acorn Archimedes was launched, I'd say this was long overdue!)

I finally feel that the OpenJDK BSD port is nearing a state where it makes sense to try to upstream it, and get it fully integrated into the OpenJDK infrastructure and build/test/CI frameworks. There's still a lot of work remaining to get there, it has to be done in portions and with the cooperation of the upstream project, but I hope to be able to spend the next six months or so to get there.

Thanks a lot to the welcoming and supportive OpenJDK developer community, as well as the @FreeBSD Foundation and the people there for sponsoring and supporting the project, and for providing help and insights about the FreeBSD internals when I got stuck.

This is an African Spoonbill (Platalea alba), easily recognised by its striking all-white plumage and that distinctive spoon-shaped bill. That unusual bill isn’t just for show, it’s perfectly adapted for sweeping through shallow water in search of small fish, insects, and crustaceans. The red skin around the eyes is quite prominent here, which is often more noticeable during the breeding season.

White-faced Whistling duck (Dendrocygna viduata). A distinctive duck with a bold black-and-white head, rich rufous breast, and finely barred flanks. Like other whistling-ducks, it has a long neck and legs, giving it a slightly goose-like profile. Typically found around freshwater marshes, lakes, and rice paddies. Often seen in sizeable flocks, sometimes in the hundreds. It’s fairly widespread across parts of South America and Africa, and it tends to feed mainly at night.
