Squirrels do not hibernate and therefore stockpile food for the winter when nature provides little or no food. To do this, the animals bury seeds, nuts or mushrooms in the ground in various places in the fall, usually near tree trunks, or they hide their supplies in crevices or tree hollows. No food is stored in the burrow. To find the food again in winter, the animals use both their sense of smell and their sense of orientation. They do not remember every deposit, but they do remember the area and the hiding pattern. Nevertheless, they often do not find all the food again, so that the buried seeds and nuts begin to germinate in spring. The squirrels thus play an important ecological role in forest development. In spring and fall, squirrels change their fur. The rodent adapts to the respective outside temperatures. The winter coat is much thicker and darker in color than the summer coat. The tail is also bushier in winter and the hair tufts on the ears are longer; the tufts fall out when the fur changes in spring.#myphoto
