#mixing is really the worst part of #recording - you can either improve a song or kill it completely
Working on some heavy mixes in Reaper. I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out why it sounds muddy and far away compared to reference tracks. Like it's playing in another room. Anyone here have some suggestions or ideas? #music #mixing #recording
Okay, I'm still #mixing but it's time to look toward #mastering, which I'll be at soon enough.
So, those of you that do your own mastering (or do it professionally, if you don't mind sharing your secrets):
1) What does your mastering chain look like? Ideally, in generic terms (eg saturation -> EQ -> compressor -> limiter rather than Fab Filter Pro 9 -> UAudio LA1176 -> Izotope MasterBlaster 9k) because I'm using stock Ableton plugins for the most part apart from the limiter

Sometimes I feel likemany modern plugins and tools are just there to remove imperfections, but I firmly believe that so much music does only feel "alive" because of small and large imperfections. Yes, I'm all for removing unneccessary reverb from a bad room recording. No, I don't want all my vocal lines to align perfectly with each other.

I haven't tried it yet, let alone heard it, but #audioassault just released an interesting looking sort of #500module #emulation #mixing #plugin for #linuxaudio called Mix Locker. https://audioassault.mx/mixlocker
If the thing sounds any good, emulating modules like the SSL 4000E, Telefunken V76 and Neve 1073 mic preamps, Empirical Labs Distressor EL8 and Manley Massive Passive (15 modules in total), I could imagine it being really fun. 
I have mixed my albums primarily on a pair of Audeze Mobius headphones. I'm considering switching to their MM-100s but am wondering if any #musicians have a recommendation for a good DAC to use instead of my computer's default headphone jack.

Q3 doesn’t stop working because q 4 exists. They just added innovation so that you are incentivised to upgrade as the product is offering you something you want.
More software should do this. Just like the old days :)
