#OnThisDay in 1917, an Austro-Hungarian naval force of three cruisers, two destroyers and three submarines attacked the Otranto Barrage. The barrage was an Allied anti-submarine barrier manned primarily by armed trawlers.

Fourteen of the forty-seven drifters on the barrage at the time of the attack were sunk, and four were damaged.

Prior to 1940, many Ontario communities had a Boer War era cannon in a park or beside their town hall to commemorate that town's participation. Most of these cannons were melted down in preparation for #WWII, so the history of Canada’s 1st overseas military campaign was removed from public view. It wasn't our finest moment in history as British commanders used our troops to destroy South African villages.

80 years ago, Germany surrendered to Allied forces in WWII, leading to the declaration of May 8 as Victory in Europe Day. @npr spoke to 96-year-old Harry Miller, who was a soldier in the 740th Tank Battalion stationed in northern Germany, about what that day was like and the things he's learned. "I hope, I hope people will see the futility of it all," he says.

#OnThisDay in 1942, Admiral Syfret accepted the formal surrender of the French forces in Diego Suarez. The next day, Churchill sent a note to 29th Independent Infantry Brigade, whom he had observed in training some months before. He wrote, "I was sure when I saw you at Inverary nine months ago that the 29th Brigade Group would make its mark."

At 1:45pm #OnThisDay in 1980, three shots were heard from inside the Iranian Embassy. The hostage Abbas Lavasani had been murdered, but nobody outside the embassy knew that yet.

At 6:46pm Lavasani's body was dumped outside the embassy. Within an hour, the #SAS had assaulted the building, killing five terrorists. One hostage, Ali Akbar Samadzadeh, died during the attack. The siege was over.
