I was about 12. I wanted to build a Jacob's Ladder similar to the ones you see in old science fiction movies, like Dr. Zarkov's lab in the Flash Gordon serials, so my grandpa, with whom I was living at the time, obtained a (still easily available) Model T Ford coil for me. Powered by a transformer from my Lionel train set, it produced an impressive continuous arc.</p>
