666 😈 for #spookysaturday episode #15

Bologna's network of porticoes covers an area of about 62km.
The longest uninterrupted one starts just outside Porta Saragozza and leads up to San Luca - this portico is 3.8km long and is the longest in the world! It also contains 666 arches (there are actually 658 because some of them don't get counted as proper arches but I'm not an arch-eologist), which is symbolically important and is often associated with the devil.
Supposedly this number and the serpentine nature of the path as you lead up to San Luca is ment to represent the Virgin Mary conquering the serpent, the devil.
Another interesting thing is you're not supposed to go up with your partner if you're not married because that will mean that you are going to break up.
✨Top tip - break up at the bottom and get back together on the way home. ✨

Sir Guy of Gisborne - Fact or Fiction?

Sir Guy of Gisborne first appeared in medieval ballads as an assassin who attempted to kill Robin Hood. He also appeared as a romantic rival to Robin Hood, seeking to win Maid Marian’s affections.

Friar Tuck - Fact or Fiction?

Along with Maid Marian, Friar Tuck was associated in medieval ballads and plays with the May Games. In some of the legends he was a monk at Fountains Abbey and St Mary’s Abbey, York.

In many versions of the legends, Friar Tuck first encounters Robin Hood on a riverbank. There, a battle of wits ensues as first one then the other is forced to carry his tormentor across the river.

The "Gospel of James" is a very early Christian fanfic (2nd century). It's the main source of the legend that Jesus's mother was a perpetual virgin - there's no basis for that in the Bible.

Anyway, here's the fun bit:

Right after delivery, a skeptical midwife tries to examine the "virgin" Mary gynecologically. Her hands burn off. Then Mary forgives her, and an angel descends with a fresh pair of replacement hands!

This illustration of the story is from France c.1480.

Little John - Fact or Fiction?

Little John aka John Little is one of the regular characters in the Robin Hood legends. A giant, sometimes portrayed as seven feet tall, and a master of the quarterstaff, Little John could be relied upon to provide muscle whenever Robin Hood needed it.
