Fonts In Use<p>Sixty years ago, in November 1963, <a href="https://typo.social/tags/MauriceSendak" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MauriceSendak</span></a> published his now famous <a href="https://typo.social/tags/ChildrensBook" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ChildrensBook</span></a>, Where the Wild Things Are. </p><p>Did you know that the casual letterforms on the first edition <a href="https://typo.social/tags/BookCover" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BookCover</span></a> aren’t custom drawn, but type? They stem from an obscure <a href="https://typo.social/tags/font" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>font</span></a> named Safari which came with numerous alternate glyphs. Patrick Concannon put together a post about the <a href="https://typo.social/tags/design" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>design</span></a>, and <span class="h-card"><a href="https://mstdn.social/@jaykay109" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>jaykay109</span></a></span> tracked down the origin of the <a href="https://typo.social/tags/typeface" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>typeface</span></a>. His book, “In the Night Kitchen,” is one of the most censored children’s books in the U.S., supposedly because of its depiction of a naked child. Sendak was an atheist Jew who lost numerous family members in the Holocaust. However, he was quoted as saying, "My gods are Herman Melville, Emily Dickinson, Mozart. I believe in them with all my heart." He was also gay and lived with his partner for 50 years.
