20/04/2025 - A Sunday morning stroll to the bottle bank again (I eat a lot of jam and those jars keep building up).

It's that time of year again when one of my favourite small things start to show, Common Liverwort. It just looks like it's from a different planet.

Thousands of #trees planted in #Devon to start creation of Celtic rainforest

"They used to cover large parts of #Britain... The mature temperate #rainforest will take several decades to become established, but the gains for nature will be much swifter... #TemperateRainforests support an abundance of #wildlife including #birds while their damp conditions mean #mosses, #liverworts, #lichens, #ferns and #fungi thrive on the trees as well as the forest floor."

Lost area of Welsh #rainforest to be returned to ancient glory theguardian.com/environment/ar

"The 59-hectare site in #Pembrokeshire will be planted with species such as #oak, small-leaf lime and wild service (Sorbus torminalis) and should support an abundance of #mosses, #liverworts, #lichens and #ferns as well as providing a home for #animals and other plant life. Its southern tip will connect to remnants of the #CelticRainforest in the #GwaunValley while in the north it runs on to open #moorland."

The bryological societies of Sweden, Norway, Britain and Ireland have the pleasure to invite beginners and experts alike to a webinar on liverwort heath, which is a rare community worldwide. This event aims to shed some light on this often forgotten and sometimes neglected habitat. Four presentations will be held by experts from Ireland, Scotland, Norway and Sweden.

21/04/2024 - A Sunday stroll to the bottle bank to get rid of the evidence. On the way back we started looking at tiny things. A 20 min walk turned into 7 hrs. Peaceful, slow and even the rain held off. A good day.

My new favourite tiny thing - Common Liverwort. This stuff is fantastic. Like something out of a 50s sci-fi film.

Harrastajastatuksen ylellisyys: voi sanoa ”en tiedä”. Esim. onko tää Lophozia whatever oikeasti metsälovisammal L. guttulata vai korpilovisammal L. silvicola. Täytyy hakea näyte ja tutkia.

[edit, skoopattu] Se on L. guttulata.

Metsälovisammal on vaarantunut ja korpilovisammal elinvoimainen. Aina kun asiaan liittyy mahd. uhanalainen laji, kyllä mä nää haluaisin ainakin omilla mailla kasvavista esiintymistä katsoa ihan lajilleen.

Eliza Amy Hodgson was a #bryologist who collected specimens throughout the early 20th century in New Zealand. Hodgeson specialized in hepatics and published over 30 scientific papers on varying #liverworts. Although she didn’t have any formal training in botany, she was recognized as a liverworts expert and a part of the British Bryological Society. She collected over 700 #specimens and eventually donated them. In her honor, the species 𝘓𝘦𝘫𝘦𝘶𝘯𝘦𝘢 𝘩𝘰𝘥𝘨𝘴𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘢 was named after her. 1/2
