@krutonium @landley I mean, Ideally @OS1337 would be come a simpler and better alternative to #LinuxFromScratch or #YoctoLinux / #YoctoProject when it comes to getting started on a device.

Cuz #RaspberryPi de-facto monopolized non-#amd64 / non-#ix86 - #SBCs because they actually give a shit and publish #documentation!

  • So whilst they certainly don't support other OSes than #RaspberryPiOS, they don't just tell folks like @geerlingguy to not pester them with questions in their Forums.

@lmemsm the closest I know is @landley 's writeups to his minimalist #Linux "distro" (or rather reference implementation of #toybox + #musl / Linux known as #mkroot.

  • toybox on it's own is basically a clean, minimalist #Userland inspired by #BusyBox but licensed under #0BSD.

  • mkroot then just is that, Linux Kernel and the necessary "wiring" to make it go brr in #QEMU.

He also releases his toolchain and has (by his own account) basically bootstrapped from there not just to #LinuxFromScratch but also 50% #BeyondLinuxFromScratch to evidence that it can be extended to arbitrary complexity.

  • And that's why I chose that as basis for @OS1337 ...
landley.netWhat is toybox?

@OpenComputeDesign @landley @light yeah, I literally have an allergy to #Windows, as it causes nausea, diharrea and vomiting to me when being exposed to it.

  • And I don't have a problem with diving nor rough seas...

As for #UI & #UX, there are ways to objectively "quantify" good and bad

Maybe that's why I want to do the computing version of "living in the woods" and build a distro ( @OS1337 ) with 80x25 display size #Terminal / #CLI / #TUI at it's core...

  • But then again some may also claim I do #OS1337 because I can't be assed to do #LinuxFromScratch, but that's at best a motivator...

Hey #linux community, I ask of you all yet again. I wanna know some fun, chaotic, weird, random Linux distros.

For now I've got #nixos, #vanillaos, #funtoo, #mxlinux, #qubes, #antix, & #puppylinux on a quick Google search.

It's been almost 2 years since I touched NixOS so might as well play around with it again.

I'll start googling up some more & I'm also gonna be looking on #distrowatch later but I gotta go eat my midnight snacks, lol.

Again, no #linuxfromscratch / #lfs. That's for laters!

Hey #linux community, I wanna play around with more distros and stuff. Particularly ones that isn't #systemd but might use #busybox. Right now I have #voidlinux & #devuan in my head.

I mean I could just go to #distrowatch & use filters but I like hearing people's personal experience about these distros and I'll admit I'm really lazy browsing forums and discussions right now. 😅

I've already tried #gentoo, #alpine, and #slackware. Also no #linuxfromscratch #lfs. That's for waay later taters.

@ravirockks OFC they don't.

At best they show people how to change fan curves in the #UEFI or hiw to run #memtest86+, but mostly they just "teach" people how to consume #Windows and at best #macOS and that's it.

Same with @libreoffice / #LibreOffice & @thunderbird / #Thunderbird.

@arrjay OFC I'd also recommend to take a look at pass which is a password manager for use on #CLI / #TUI interfaces...

Granted the goal of @OS1337 is to make the simplest yet still useable #distro one can actually work on , based off me not being willing to do #LinuxFromScratch or @yoctoproject or even more #cursed stuff like #OpenADK and also wanting to answer the question:

www.passwordstore.orgPass: The Standard Unix Password ManagerPass is the standard unix password manager, a lightweight password manager that uses GPG and Git for Linux, BSD, and Mac OS X.
