• Ideally #SBC manufacturers would at least release the #drivers (if they can't be assed to #mainline them into #Linux) and #ReproduceableBuilds with build scripts to make them go brrr...

Cuz #RaspberryPi de-facto monopolized non-#amd64 / non-#ix86 - #SBCs because they actually give a shit and publish #documentation!

• So whilst they certainly don't support other OSes than #RaspberryPiOS, they don't just tell folks like @geerlingguy to not pester them with questions in their Forums.

@lmemsm the closest I know is @landley 's writeups to his minimalist #Linux "distro" (or rather reference implementation of #toybox + #musl / Linux known as #mkroot.

• toybox on it's own is basically a clean, minimalist #Userland inspired by #BusyBox but licensed under #0BSD.

• mkroot then just is that, Linux Kernel and the necessary "wiring" to make it go brr in #QEMU.

He also releases his toolchain and has (by his own account) basically bootstrapped from there not just to #LinuxFromScratch but also 50% #BeyondLinuxFromScratch to evidence that it can be extended to arbitrary complexity.

• And that's why I chose that as basis for @OS1337 ...

@Linux The opposite is exactly what I loved about the #lfs #LinuxFromScratch IRC channel 25 years ago.

I think LFS is hardly worth doing (for now). Maybe when I've gotten bored of Gentoo too, I'll do LFS. Idk I'll see in about 3 years or earlier of using Gentoo.

At best they show people how to change fan curves in the #UEFI or hiw to run #memtest86+, but mostly they just "teach" people how to consume #Windows and at best #macOS and that's it.

• I mean I don't expect any training center to teach people how to build #mkroot (#toybox + #linux) or #LinuxFromScratch but at least showing people how to use @ubuntu / #UbuntuLTS & @tails_live / @tails / #Tails should be in the cards if #RHEL & #SLES / #SLED isn't.

Same with @libreoffice / #LibreOffice & @thunderbird / #Thunderbird.

• At least the most pointless certification - #ECDL - isn't hard-locked to #Windows11 & #MicrosoftOffice per-se!

And my motivation for @OS1337 is the same as @landley has for #toybox - except I'm too stupid/lazy to do #LinuxFromScratch and want to do something simpler, faster, more auditable and reproduceable in a feasible amount of time.

@arrjay OFC I'd also recommend to take a look at pass which is a password manager for use on #CLI / #TUI interfaces...

@FirewallDragons needless to, say I'm dissatisfied with existing options re: #Firmware, espechally for.my prokects like #PocketCrypto [1], #Cryptofon [2] and #LambdaCrypt [3] that I started @OS1337 [4] as #OpenADK, #YoctoProject amd #LinuxFromScratch are either too #cringe, #bloated or #complex IMHO and I wantes something simple and auditable...
