When trees ruled the world

Around 300 million years ago, nature found a new plant strategy. #Lignin. It let plants grow taller by providing a solid structure that gave way to the first trees, scale trees, covering earth for 60M years.

For millions of years there was nothing that could break down the lignin so the trees didn't decompose, they simply fell and were gradually covered.

It's these trees, not dinosaurs, where our fossil fuels come from.

I wrote a little #lignin #plantbiology perspective article entirely in #rstats #Quarto a while back (leonardblaschek.github.io/asse) and had a blast. I ran into a couple of bugs along the way, but the quarto team was lightning fast in fixing them.

The only thing I'm still wrapping my head around is efficient co-writing with colleagues not using git. Any better ideas than rendering to .docx and manually copying track changes into the source file?

When plant parts #survive thousands of years. Dead plant parts filled with #lignin fulfill a variety of tasks as #wood in living #trees, but they also allow wood to survive for an impressively #longtime under suitable conditions.

Here, for example, wooden #coffins from #ancient #Egypt:

2) Lid of the inner coffin of the priest Nespamai, 27th Dynasty, 500 BC.
