If you can get past the Kevin Spacey of it all, this is otherwise phenomenal. (Spacey is great too, but the ick is there.) An expansive cast of great performers deliver knockout work led by Guy Pearce Russell Crowe, and Kim Basinger. Curtis Hansen and his team sets the film awash in 1950s Los Angeles gumshoe vibes mixed with a modern sensibility about police corruption and more. Add in a beautifully quotable script from Hanson and Brian Helgeland, a hell of a score by Jerry

L.A. Confidential was released 27 years ago this week. Acclaimed as among of the best films of director Curtis Hanson, and one of the great Hollywood thrillers of the ‘90s.

Kim Basinger had to dye her hair blonde to match Veronica Lake but the dye they used damaged her hair. Basinger had to get it cut really short a few days before filming, and the make up team found a wig made with real hair in super-quick time.
