David Mitchell :CApride:As the ridiculous flap over Jasper’s fire report continues on this one year anniversary of the fire, keep this in mind:The conditions last July were locally unprecedented; a combination of high temperatures, extremely low humidity, and very high winds that hadn’t been seen before.Federal agencies (Parks Canada) invested millions of dollars over the last 20 years in undoing a century of strict fire suppression in the park. Through controlled burns and selective logging, they reduced fuel loads in the understory, concentrating their efforts in areas approaching critical infrastructure like campgrounds and the townsite. Fire experts and researchers visiting and assessing the landscape note that the fire’s severity and behaviour changed - burning along the ground and becoming less severe - in areas that had been addressed. Paul Turnbull 🇨🇦Took the time to read the Jasper Wildfire Complex Municipal After-Action Review and my impression of the section addressing jurisdiction and authorities is that it is very even handed. It basically says the jurisdictional overlap created challenges that need clarifying. Yes, requests from the Alberta government were an issue but that was because of a lack of formal agreements to handle this kind of situation. Overall it's an interesting read and not too long as these kinds of reports go. It doesn't make any claims beyond the Alberta government's requests being a distraction to the Incident Commanders. There doesn't appear to be anything said about how much of an impact that was and no blame is assigned. Paul Turnbull 🇨🇦The report on the response to the Jasper wildfire aligns with my feelings about it at the time. For the teams fighting the fires there doesn’t appear to have been any confusion. The Incident Command System is very clear about who’s in charge of what when teams come in from other organizations.
