Jane Fonda gave a barnstorming speech at last night's Screen Actors Guild Awards as she accepted her Lifetime Achievement statue. "Acting gave me a chance to play angry women with opinions, which as you know, is a bit of a stretch for me. I’m a big believer in unions — they have our backs. They bring us into community and they give us power. Community means power. This is really important right now when workers’ power is being attacked and community is being weakened,” she said. “We are in our documentary moment. This is it, and it’s not a rehearsal. And we mustn’t for a moment kid ourselves about what is happening. This is big-time serious. … We must not isolate. We must stay in community. We must help the vulnerable. I am struggling a bit to figure out what to make of the fact that today's "Good News in History" posting (goodnewsnetwork.org/events0612) has a brief bio of #JaneFonda, because it's her birthday, and doesn't say anything about the political activism which has been prominent throughout her life. She is far better known for her anti-Vietnam-War activism than for starting a nonprofit for preventing teen pregnancy, and yet they choose to mention the latter and not the former. 🤔
