Taking pictures of San Jose reminded me of a great website that has disappeared, "The Soft Underbelly of San Jose". Fortunately, the #InternetArchive kept it.

This post was stimulated by "quiet mode" discussion of Postman and his books...
I need to circle back and re-read his "Technopoly: The Surrender of Culture to Technology".
I read it when it came out in 1992, but frankly don't remember much from it.
Edit: Free #PDF on archive.org!
This is from the Wikipedia entry:
"Postman considers technopoly to be the most recent of three kinds of cultures distinguished by shifts in their attitude towards technology – tool-using cultures, technocracies, and technopolies. Each, he says, is produced by the emergence of new technologies that "compete with old ones…mostly for dominance of their worldviews".
I've always wondered, how does the #InternetArchive handle #DMCA complaints? Do they punish users who do the #upload? I've accumulated the occasional #disc #image or #VHS tape that I'd love to #contribute, but I don't like the idea of losing my account because of it.

I feel dumb. I want to search the #InternetArchive (for books and other media) by genre, but I can't seem to figure out how. I don't think a subject search is quite the same as browsing by genre, is it? @AmeliasBrain you seem to be savvy on this kind of stuff, any ideas?
It doesn't take much. We must support critical Internet Infrastructure.
@archive.org is a court-recognized history of what was on the internet and is under attack. It is under attack by those who want to rewrite history and ultimately lie about what has occurred. We can fight this with $5/m.
The #InternetArchive wants your support for this petition urging the record labels to drop their existential lawsuit. I signed.
Something to think about:
It's very easy to say,
Well, you should not use the Internet Archive or similar resource because it is unethical because authors are not paid and anyone who does is a thief
I doubt you thought about the fact some people can't afford to buy books and in many areas libraries do not exist,or people are unable to leave their home due to a disability or other reason
With your reasoning anyone who is not well off, disabled or in a situation you have the privilege to never think about or encounter does not deserve to be educated or informed; hopefully your circumstances never abruptly change
The next time you judge someone try checking your privilege at the door.

I said months ago that I'd eventually work on getting the stuff from my old vintage file archive properly organized and uploaded to the #InternetArchive. I've FINALLY gotten started on it!
@MissGayle this is why the @internetarchive is so important!

@Alexandrad1 I have just found out that it is available on the #internetarchive, saviours as usual!
Stream 385,000 Vintage 78 RPM Records at the Internet Archive: Louis Armstrong, Glenn Miller, Billie Holiday & More via Open Culture[Shared]
We may have yet to develop the technology of time travel, but recorded music comes pretty close. Those who listen to it have experienced how a song or an album can, in some sense, transport them right back to the time they first heard it. But older records also have the much stranger power to conjure up eras we never experienced. You can musically send yourself as far back as the nineteen-twenties with the above Youtube playlist of digitized 78 RPM records from the George Blood collection.
The Internet Archive deleted two of my books, presumably because they contained nude images in what were otherwise serious and semi-academic books discussing serious subjects.
Does no one care about context any more? I literally wasn't sharing "porn" because "porn" is about intent unless you are going to argue that just ANY nude body is "porn" (which would be insane).

Eindelijk ... na al die jaren eindelijk maar eens gaan kijken. Vroeger was ik nooit zo onder de indruk van de trailer.
