Understanding the health impacts of the climate crisis
and imagining a positive future

"Climate change is the greatest threat to human health now."

"Climate change is already causing significant shifts in weather patterns and an increase in extreme weather events around the world, including droughts, heatwaves, wildfires, storms and floods."

"The major cause of pollution is the burning of fossil fuels, further motivating action on reducing GHG; adverse weather events, such as heatwaves, can acutely amplify pollution impacts."

A quotation from Zinn

An optimist isn’t necessarily a blithe, slightly sappy whistler in the dark of our time. To be hopeful in bad times is not just foolishly romantic. It is based on the fact that human history is a history not only of cruelty, but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage, kindness. What we choose to emphasize in this complex history will determine our lives. If we see only the worst, it destroys our capacity to do something. If we remember those times and places — and there are so many — where people have behaved magnificently, this gives us the energy to act, and at least the possibility of sending this spinning top of a world in a different direction.
And if we do act, in however small a way, we don’t have to wait for some grand utopian future. The future is an infinite succession of presents, and to live now as we think human beings should live, in defiance of all that is bad around us, is itself a marvelous victory.

Howard Zinn (1922-2010) American historian, academic, author, social activist

#Fossil #fuel companies will continue to seek profits and damn the consequences (and most of us on their way).

This needs to be controlled and taxed - at the moment it is subsidised enormously, holds back #renewable development and as the people in #Scotland have found out, is used as a rod for their backs (renewable power is sacrificed by linking costs to gas and we pay more than anywhere else in Northern Europe - England included for our power).

The dispute — along w/ #inaction at the #FEC & #Congress — could leave #voters w/limited federal #protections against those who use #AI to #mislead the public or mask their #political msgs…. New #generativeAI technologies have already proved capable of creating uncannily realistic images.

“AI has the potential to be very influential in our #elections, & right now, there’s a total vacuum of #regulation on this issue,” said Ellen Weintraub, the Democratic vice chair of the FEC.
