The eastern redbud is a small tree, native to eastern North America. It's also known as the Judas tree because: 1) a legend states that Judas hanged himself from one of these trees*. The tree, which was tall and had white flowers, became stunted and the flowers turned red, either with shame or to honor the death of Jesus. 2) The redbud blooms around Easter, which is when Judas betrayed Jesus.
