Welkom nieuwe Glasvezel Overheersers!

So excited about getting my new home firewall/router:
TLSense N100L4: 4x 2.5Gbit LAN, N100 CPU, 256GB NVMe SSD, 16GB RAM.
It will be running OPNSense and I'm really looking forward replacing all these horrible ASUS Routers that I've insisted on running.
Fun fact: I've always mounted my access points on the ceiling or placed them high up on furniture, as the technical specs usually recommend. But today, I decided to try something different: I moved mine and mounted it on the wall.
Surprisingly, the Wi-Fi coverage in the most remote parts of my house has dramatically improved! It just goes to show how fascinating the study of wave propagation truly is.
I came across the #Fail2Ban #docker image from #linuxserverio and thought to myself that it's finally time to set up Fail2Ban. I admit i never used it before and it was a bit difficult to add it to my #playbook as all of my #servers have different services and therefore different #logfile paths, but that's nothing #jinja #templating can't fix.
Now that i've got #Discord notifications for banned #IPs, it's time to work on actual #IPblocking. I also want to use the #IPComplaint and #AbuseIPDB actions as i really like the idea of reporting abuse (even though i have no idea how effective that may be).
I may also want to replace the discord #webhook with #email notifications later as that's mostly the reason i've set up a #mailserver ( #stalwart ) in the first place.
I mean, most of my services are only accessible from #tailscale or my #homenetwork, but since #Ansible makes it so much easier to apply higher standards, i just can't resist. My #homelab is changing every day and i think setting up additional #security, even though i don't need it yet, is never a bad idea.
Thousands of Asus routers are being hit with stealthy, persistent backdoors
Backdoor giving full administrative control can survive reboots and firmware updates.
My Asus wifi router randomly crashed and now I'm paranoid and wondering if I should replace it (it's several years old and wifi 6, otherwise works fine).
Curious about mesh systems. Are the Eero systems reputable or should I look into something from, say, ubiquity?

What would be a sensible step up from running my local network stuff on Raspberry Pi devices? Thinking an old mini desktop machine with proxmox to run a few bits separately? #homenetwork #proxmox #homelab
Finally I was able to discover my #Docker #containers automatically as services on my #gethomepage deployment. The issue was pretty simple and a stupid one in the end. Running the homepage container as root when using Docker socket directly solved it. It is mentioned in the documentation, but I overlooked it for some reason.
I‘m still excited for the widget. Need to dig into building customized widgets. Anyone experiences?

Created an overview of the devices and apps running in my home network with #gethomepage. It looks also pretty neat on mobile device and I really lime the available widgets. #homenetwork #proxmox #gitlab #pihole
Just realized my network is perfectly balanced. I have 13 wired clients and 13 wireless.

Just enabled internet traffic flow visualization in UniFi UI. And the winners of the most constant traffic flows are (except, obviously, my macbook): the vacuum cleaner, the printer, and the air purifier. That's some crazy shit.

Job done. 9 x 80mm holes cut in the ply at the back for cables and ventilation.
Top drawer contains power board, router, an old Mac Mini running AdGuard Home, Tapo T315 Temperature and Humidity Monitor.
Bottom drawer contains 4-port Netgear switch, Fingbox, Tapo H200 hub, Home Assistant Green.
Under desk no longer a dusty trip hazard. Just Starlink cable, power for monitor, Belkin Qi2 charger, and MacBook Pro, and TP-Link AV1300 3-Port Gigabit Passthrough Powerline base station.
This could likely have been done much better, but this cost me nothing except 2 hours of my time.
Do you have a frequently scheduled #patchday for your home IT equipment? Usually I have done it on the fly but now I scheduled it on a monthly basis and check if there are updates/patches available and needed. Wish me luck.
After years of putting my Ethernet switch and other network equipment on the floor leaning against the wall, I decided to get an actual rack to put everything in. It's so much more convenient now :)
Just got an email from Microsoft, telling me they will raise the price of MS 365 from 140 AUD to 180 AUD.
Time to rethink that solution.
For office apps we can move to LibreOffice, I think that will work more than fine for our needs.
I have been using OneDrive as backup (simply because we had it.), moving away from that definitely will need some research.
Any suggestions from #homelab / #homenetwork people regarding online backup services? I don't need that much. 0.5 TB would be fine, but 1TB would give some room going forward.
I feel like the mouse that's been given a cookie. I've very quickly gone from “I have one machine that can do 2.5GbE to the internet" to "all ports in my house need to be 2.5GbE capable”. I think the next step will be "all wifi needs to be 6GHz w/ 2.5GbE uplinks”. Not sure it's worth the

Sonic 10G fiber + Unifi UDM SE (2.5GbE WAN port) + CalDigit 4 thunderbolt dock w/ 2.5GbE port. I don't think it will make a huge difference, but it's still cool. #unifi #homenetwork #sonic
My new network switch for my home network has arrived and is installed.
TP-Link and easy-easy auto configuration.
I've been sent the POE version rather than the cheaper non-POE version I ordered, so it's future proofed I suppose.
My WiFi speeds seem to have marginally improved which is a bit odd considering it's an extra step in the network between router and me.
I bought it planning for the new broadband next month.
