The parliament was blocking his political initiatives, his term of office was running out and the constitution forbade another run as president.So he decided to coup himself out and replace the elected president (himself) by an self-declared president (himself) with quasi dictatorial powers. Using his presidential office to place supporters in the right places and removing potential opponents from those, he made sure the coup would succeed. And so it did. 200 people paid their opposition to his illegal move with their lives. About 30000 were arrested and jailed or deported. Many more went to into exile like the famous writer Victor Hugo.Once the coup succeeded, he proceeded to convert his (theoretically) electable presidency into a hereditary position and he himself would become: Emperor Napoleon III.Of course this occurrence is so strange, it could never ever happen again.
