MonissaOK Port Arthur. (I spent a good part of this afternoon trying to determine if Port Arthur had a Police Office. Currently, it seems not, despite me having a deed box from said PO sitting on my desk. This is business as usual :) )So, let's talk the convict system and I can remember how much I've forgotten. Prisoners arriving in Van Diemen's Land in the early part of the century were subject to the Assignment System (this was replaced by the Probation System about 1840 but assignment is what most people have heard about. Simply put, prisoners servants were sent out to work for "free settlers" i.e. those not under sentence. Their employer was expected to provide them with food, clothing soap and other necessities, and in return they got cheap labour and were responsible for them. (Side note: for married couples, one spouse could be assigned to the other.) Now, if said PS would good, they'd earn indulgences, such as a Ticket of Leave, which granted privileges such as being able to work ofr oneself (i.e. earn money) and then a Conditional Pardon, which gave you all the rights of a free person, except you couldn't return home. However, if they misbehaved, they were punished. For men this meant hard labour, hard labour in chains, or being sent to a place of secondary punishment. One of these established on Sarah Island, in Macquarie Harbour, on the west coast, for the worst of the worst. It was remote and surrounded by inhospitable rainforest. And then on Maria Island on the east coast, for the not quite so worst of the worse. Not so remote and surrounded by sea. Unfortunately, Sarah Island was too remote. Winds made it difficult to negotiate the entrance and it was a long trip from Hobart, but prisoners kept trying to escape. Whereas Sarah Island was too close to the coast (swimming distance actually). So, a new station was established on Tasman's Peninsula c.1830, and the others closed down. To get to the peninsula, you first have to get through Forestiers Peninsula, and then cross a narrow spit of land to Tasman. That narrow spit of land was guarded, by both soldiers and row of nasty dogs. So no escaping (mostly). But it was fairly easy trip from Hobart by ship. It was surrounded by a no-go zone from civilian ships though. I assume some star alliance flight from central Europe to Portugal and then to Brazil. But then which airport in Rio Grande Do Sul?</li><li>How do I get from the airport to Rio Grande? My options are taxi/chauffeur or rental car, I assume prebooked taxi is the safer option, but is it safe to drive myself by car? (Not meaning the traffic itself.)</li></ol>I drove in many countries and am very well aware of chaotic traffic around the world. My driving skills were formed in China, Europe, Africa and lately in Thailand, so I guess Brazil will be no problem traffic wise.Any inside on this area of Brazil is welcome too!
