#greenhouse

Bah. Mastodon just ate my thousand word thread, and I don't feel like retyping everything, so here's a real short version!

Got a lot done today; I put up drip edging on both sides of the greenhouse, to make sure water falls away from the surface rather than running down the glass and the siding. Also put up two pieces of glass!

Here's a timelapse of the process of one of them. It's usually a bit smoother; had some issues with positioning this time, but such is life! Anyone who tells you a big project went perfectly is hiding their mistakes.

Finally finished the first row of glass, plus both doors - meaning I can now leave the door open and let my cat explore. :)

Here he is outside for the first time in most of a decade; he was apparently an outdoor kitty with his previous family, but has been indoor only with me (apartments at first + now a busy street out front + birds are my friends).

I'll probably post something more greenhouse focused soon, but it is a beautiful day and he had a great time laying in sun.

"#AI continues to improve – at least according to benchmarks. But the promised benefits have largely yet to materialize while models are increasing in size and becoming more computationally demanding, and #greenhouse gas #emissions from AI training continue to rise."

Day 22 cont 🌀🌊🔥💨

“The #Coalition (#LNP, #Liberal, #Nationals) is refusing to say if it will introduce any #policies to cut #Australia’s #greenhouse #gas #emissions in the next decade as it pledges to #unwind most #ClimateMeasures introduced under #Labor.

#PeterDutton’s position on the #ClimateCrisis came under scrutiny last week after he gave contradictory answers on whether he accepted mainstream climate science. Asked during a leaders’ debate on the #ABCAustralia whether #ExtremeWeather events were worsening, the opposition leader said: “I don’t know because I’m not a #scientist”.”

Say IT AS IT IS.

The #LNP under the leadership of the #PeterDutton has no policies. Policy changes are random.

The Guardian · ‘Bordering on incredible’: Coalition under fire for planning to scrap Labor climate policies and offering none of its ownBy Adam Morton

Been a while since I posted a greenhouse status update. The roof is almomost completely done, only missing one pane - I broke one putting it up, and itis taken a while to get a replacement.

Also almost halfway done with the wall glass - just two more pones for the bottom concourse. It's really starting to feel like a proher structure!

With the roof complete, I've been starting work on the walls of my greenhouse.

I got a lot done today; almost done painting the siding (cheap white barn/fence paint to seal it against the weather), and screwed a couple pieces of siding up.

No pictures unfortunately, it was a bit dark by the time I finished, so you'll just have to imagine. Maybe I'll take some tomorrow after I get the first few pieces of glass in place.

----

The front is composed of 6 bays, each 4' wide and slightly less than 8' tall. Each bay is framed on the bottom by the sill plate, the sides by 4x4 posts, and the top by a 2x10 fascia board.

Each bay will be filled by an 18" piece of siding then two 36" pieces of glass, with 1/4" silicone caulking joint between each.

Inspired by @BlossomLikeFlowers I've been working on a similar mini #greenhouse - what I have learnt is I will never be a carpenter and also working with perspex/acrylic is hard...

It's mainly wood from other projects and the perspex was from a table cover we've had in storage. It hinges at the top and has triangular pieces on the side. Still need to fix one of sides and also build a back but it's taking shape.

Beautiful morning in Seattle, and the greenhouse glass is frosted over.

I finished putting up the fixed glass for the roof yesterday, all 22 panes of it. There's still the two hinged / vent panes to get up, and the joint between the house and the greenhouse isn't done yet - next steps!

For the joint, I'm planning to put of a sheet of siding (plywood), then over that roll out some aluminum flashing on top to protect it from the elements.

I also need to order a replacement pane of glass for one that I broke - been putting that off in case I broke a second one, but now's the time. Alas, they were manufactured by a Canadian firm and are likely rather more expensive than they were a few months ago. 😬

Buying carbon credits to fight climate change? Here’s what to know

#CarbonCredits sold on the voluntary market are under scrutiny for not offsetting #Greenhouse#Gas emissions as claimed.

One investigation concluded that over 90 percent of carbon credits issued for #rainforest protection by the largest carbon credit certification body “had no benefit to the climate.” Two reports published in 2023 found that credits for forest-based projects in North America, South America, Africa and Asia may in fact #increase net #emissions
