Mushrooms at Great Basin

I was hiking the Timber Creek trail out at Great Basin National Park when I came across this colony of mushrooms.
I must admit that I know next to nothing in regards to mushroom species so I am unable to identify these.
What I do know is that I was quite fascinated by them. They seem to have an abstract quality to them.

Mushrooms At Great Basin This is an image of a mushroom colony that I found while hiking out at Great Basin National park in Nevada. This is a closeup image of the colony that reveals a large amounts of detail. The mushrooms were some of the larger ones I have ever seen. The umbrella style upper portion of the mushrooms were roughly 5 - 6 inches in diameter. The color of the mushrooms is a yellowish brown mix. You can see a stalk of one mushroom near right center. The hoods of the mushrooms covered most of the other stems.

Lehman Caves

I'm always intrigued. by caves. I love the natural beauty of them but I do fee often feel slightly anxious being underground. Most caves that I have been have had fairly large passages, and for the most part Lehman Caves wasn't too bad but there were a couple of spots that were a little narrower than I would prefer.

Lehman Caves Lehman Caves is located in Great Basin National Park in Nevada. This cave tour was fabulous as the cave has so much to offer. In this image you can see what they call soda straws hanging from the ceiling by the hundreds. These soda straws are hollow tubes of minerals that form over hundreds of years. The path through the cave as seen here is fairly wide (not always the case). There are stalactites and stalagmites found in many places. This image has an abundance of naturally formed columns.

Great Basin National Park

I finally made my way to Great Basin National Park in Nevada and took the trail out to the only glacier in Nevada. The Wheeler Peak Glacier runs through the middle of the basin high above the tree line. Wheeler Peak rises above the glacier with a backdrop of mostly cloudy skies. Great Basin National Park This is an image captured at Great Basin National Park in Nevada. The foreground of the image has a couple of dozen of pine trees. Beyond the foreground is the bowl or basin of Wheeler Peak. With Wheeler Peak looking over the vista at 13,065 feet. The basin is full of talus rocks below the peaks. The Wheeler Peak Glacier starts near the bottom of the image slightly left of center and works it's way up the mountain until the landscape becomes too steep to hold ice and snow.

Mushrooms At Great Basin This is an image of a colony of mushrooms that I found along a hiking trail in Great Basin National Park. I don't know much about mushrooms but I really liked the abstract quality of the growth. The thick stalk right of center is the main focal point of the image. The tops of the mushrooms are somewhat umbrella shaped in overall appearance. The tops of the mushrooms look somewhat like the back of a turtle shells. The bottoms remnd of a lung type tissue.

These trees are amazing! They are tough. They live in landscapes with little competition from other trees because they evolved to withstand some of the harshest conditions that other species won't tolerate. In GBNP they often grow along side (and are easilt confused with) LImber Pines. All verbiage on interpretative sign is in the photo captions!

A Bristlecone Pine stands behind an interpretive sign that reads: A Long Life in this Special Place While science can tell us important stories about the bristlecones, there are other lessons to learn as well. Take a few minutes to think about these ancient trees. Some of them are almost 5,000 years old - human history is short compared to the lives of these trees. These solitary trees adapted to survive in this barren, windy, but beautiful mountain before humans built Stonehenge or the pyramids of the Aztecs. They have lived through thousands of seasons - scorching summer sun and freezing winter snow - along with wind, forest fires, drought, and more. For the moment this forest may seem peaceful - feel the breeze on your skin, listen to the birdsong, smell the pugent resin, and look our over this austere but beautiful landscape. What makes this place special for you? "Hollow Tree" In some ways this tree had an easier life than many of its neighbors; it grew relatively fast due to favorable site conditions. Bit this also made the tree more susceptible to decay because of its softer wood. Center rot eliminates the possibility of precisely dating the birth of this tree. A careful study of the solid wood makes it possible to estimate an age of 2,100 years. BORN ~100 BCE
