Immune Evasion, #Cell-Cell #Fusion, and #Spike Stability of the #SARS-CoV-2 #XEC #Variant: Role of #Glycosylation #Mutations at the N-terminal Domain

Source: BioRxIV, AbstractSARS-CoV-2 continues to evolve, producing new variants that drive global COVID-19 surges. XEC, a recombinant of KS.1.1 and KP.3.3, contains T22N and F59S mutations in the spike protein's N-terminal domain (NTD). The T22N mutation, similar to the DelS31 mutation in KP.3.1.1, introduces a potential…

#Hemagglutinin #glycosylation pattern-specific effects: implications for the #fitness of H9.4.2.5-branched #H9N2 avian #influenza viruses, Emerg Microbes Infect.: tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10

Overall, our study provides a systematic insight into how changes in HA glycosylation patterns regulate the evolutionary fitness and epidemiological dominance drift of h9.4.2.5-branched H9N2 AIVs, which will be of great benefit for the glycosylation-dependent vaccine design.

Avian #influenza virus #NA #stalk length & #HA #glycosylation patterns reveal molecularly directed #reassortment promoting emergence of highly pathogenic #clade 2.3.4.4b A (#H5N1) viruses biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/

These observations led us to establish and validate hypothesis that pairing of avian virus HA & NA subtypes is not stochastic but is rather molecularly programmed by HA glycosylation & NA stalk length, modulating fitness & emergence of novel avian influenza viruses.

"Our results suggest that, in a cellular context, Fab glycans inhibit IgG–hFcRn interaction and thus negatively affect the transplacental transfer of IgG. As Fab-glycosylated Abs are frequently associated with autoimmune and malignant disorders and may be potentially harmful, this might encompass a regulatory mechanism, limiting the half-life and transport of such Abs."

@profcelentyx @cellpress Interesting... I get infusions for . Some batches cause severe knee joint pain-worse than my baseline and the joints make horrible noises. Now I'm wondering if the IgG is inflammatory sometimes? I've only started IgG a year ago so I don't know what it was like in the before times. Are there other diseases that do this or just covid? I was unaware of until now.
