When I got into the localization business, I'd never in a gazillion years would have thought I'd want to work with game loc.

I wasn't a gamer per se as a kid. I had a mini game, but that was it. I hated losing, and I didn't have fun with games because of all of that pressure to succeed.

But here we are! Beginner cozy gamer, fresh out of a fun, informative game loc course. Kinda addicted to The Sims 4.

One main takeaway from the course:

There's lots of kinds of games out there! Including educational games, which is often not a path most translators think of pursuing when they consider game loc.

As is the case with all of Lucas' output, this is a special game not solely in premise and style, but also in gameplay.

Obra Dinn's one-of-a-kind deduction system is challenging enough for players to grasp. So how did the linguists who adapted it fare?

Translators don’t always have the luxury to translate from ready-made subtitling files. Sometimes there are no subtitles at all, so that they must be time-coded and generated by hand, and sometimes you have to deal with bitmapped subtitles that are very hard to OCR.

Game translators and technical translators know it: almost every file has them… the parts in the source text that list every possible part of the car or item in the game. Not the most fascinating part of the text, but one of the most important parts, as this is the place where you define the terminology for the rest of the project. However, there is one problem!

Cattitude has just released a new feature that is set to make the lives of its users much easier. This new feature allows users to show the most recent entries in their translation memories and then enables them to narrow these entries down per file. This means that users can easily show the 100 most recent entries in file A translated for client B.

While other CAT tool suppliers struggle to keep up with the times, in Cattitude, important developments in translation technology are often implemented within days or even hours. Today is no exception. If you, as a proofreader, cannot back your opinion with rules on grammar, maybe you shouldn't proofread. Style is subjective. If you don't like what your translator does, keep searching until you find a translator who writes exactly like you do (you won't), or become a translator yourself.

Quality-related discussions can only be based on measurable metrics, and your subjective "feelings" are not one of them.

Smart CAT supports Smartcat

This morning, one of our users asked whether Cattitude also supports Smartcat, another CAT tool that has become quite popular because it’s free.

It turned out Cattitude didn’t support Smartcat yet. Now it does however, and the implementation took less than 10 minutes.

Terminal velocity: terminology look-up faster than ever

It’s quite an honor for Cattitude to be compared to tools like memoQ and SDL Trados Studio, especially if you realize that the latter products are being made by huge companies with access to tons of resources, while Cattitude is basically a one-man show. Yet, the result is a fully-fledged CAT tool that is faster and smarter.
