𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴To avoid knowledge siloes, actions need to go beyond facilitating access (to computing resources, high quality datasets, AI tools and relevant expertise), and focus on enhancing capabilities to collaborate, co-design and use AI across different scientific fields and research environment. Open science principles and practices offer a clear pathway to improve challenging elements in AI-based scientific projects such as transparency, reproducibility, and public scrutiny. Ethical and safety considerations need to be centred in AI’s design and implementation. Addressing these challenges requires interdisciplinary collaboration and building scientists’ capacity to anticipate risk and provide oversight that minimises potential harms.
