Human Rights Watch: Press freedom in Greece going 'from bad to worse'.

A new report published by Human Rights Watch (HRW) has delivered a scathing assessment about the state of press freedom and the difficulties facing journalists in Greece.

HRW says the 'image internationally of a forward-thinking and modern administration' that Athens wishes to present to the world is at odds with the reality on the ground.

#FreePress advocates expressed alarm about the inclusion of #journalists…, as well as the possibility of their communications being released to the public, which goes “considerably well beyond the scope of what…leak investigations in the past have typically focused on,”says Grayson Clary, staff atty at the #Reporters Cmte for #FreedomOfThePress. Rather, the effort seems like “a tactic designed to…make it much harder for journalists to strike up those source relationships in the first instance.”

As we've discussed before, while much of America seems to be existing in a national fascist "unreality" bubble engineered by the US right and fascist collaborators in corporate media, the view from outside the realm is clearer. Ahead of World Press Freedom Day, international press freedom watchdog Reporters Without Borders is sounding the alarm in a report that indicates Trump's attempts to erode press freedoms are already succeeding.

Reporters Without Borders Sounds Alarm Over Trump Effort to 'Bring the Press Into Line'

"Trump was elected to a second term after a campaign in which he denigrated the press on a daily basis and made explicit threats to weaponize the federal government against the media," the report states.

"His early moves in his second mandate to politicize the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), ban The Associated Press from the White House, or dismantle the U.S. Agency for Global Media, for example, have jeopardized the country's news outlets and indicate that he intends to follow through on his threats, setting up a potential crisis for American journalism," the publication continues, accusing Trump of using "false economic pretexts" to "bring the press into line."

As the article notes, the RSF report features a very granular look at press freedom in America that touches on crises that predate and exist independently from Trump; although there's no question his assaults on the media are exacerbating those problems. It examines subjects like the lack of public trust in media, the lack of financial support for actual journalism, and the disintegration of local news in the United States. With that noted however, RSF makes it abundantly clear that rhetorical attacks from a primarily right wing (fascist) political class have created an environment of intimidation and danger for journalists in America.

"Politicians' open disdain for the media has trickled down to the public," RSF added. "Journalists reporting on the ground can face harassment, intimidation, and assault while working. When covering demonstrations, journalists are sometimes attacked and physically assaulted by protestors or wrongfully arrested by police. According to the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker, there were 49 journalist arrests in 2024 compared to only 15 in 2023. The last journalist to be killed in the course of his work was Dylan Lyons in February of 2023."

These alarming comments about the rapid decline of American press freedom are part of a larger Reporters Without Borders global report noting that freedom of the press is in trouble on a planetary scale as well. But RSF isn't the only watchdog organization raising the alarm about the United States. The Committee to Protect Journalists has also released a highly critical report examining Trump's first one hundred days in office, in advance of World Press Freedom Day.

"On Wednesday, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) published a report on Trump's first 100 days in office, which the group said were "marked by a flurry of executive actions that have created a chilling effect and have the potential to curtail media freedoms."

"From denying access to upending respect for the independence of a free press to vilifying news organizations to threatening reprisals, this administration has begun to exert its power to punish or reward based on coverage," CPJ said. "Whether in the states or on the streets, this behavior is setting a new standard for how the public can treat journalists."

Frankly folks I don't have a ton to add here; while modern American society seems to hold a great deal of contempt for watchdog organizations that track extractivist plundering, wealth inequality, freedom of the press, and democratic rights, the fact that you're not going to hear about these kind of things on the evening news is why publicizing these reports is so important. Having well-research data and international observers to confirm our arguments that the Trump regime is trying to stop even what passes for our media from reporting negatively on their fascist activities is an important part of making folks who aren't paying enough attention accept that those arguments are based in an increasingly disturbing reality. If you want people to band together and stop a fascist takeover, they have to be aware its happening and the work of organizations like RSF and CPJ help us make each other aware of the severity of the problem.

After threatening to target the media several hundred times since he first announced his candidacy for President, Trump is now instructing his bootlicking Attorney General Pam Bondi to make his war on journalists possible. Although Bondi is acting in the context of hunting down leakers in the Department of Defense, the reality is that Downmarket Mussolini will almost certainly come for his critics in the media and the sources they speak to, next.

Bondi Shreds Biden-Era Protections for Journalists as Trump White House Hunts Leakers

"As part of a renewed crackdown on leaks, Bondi said she is issuing revised Justice Department regulations stating that media outlets "must answer subpoenas" related to efforts to uncover sources of unauthorized disclosures within the federal government.

"The policy contemplates the use of subpoenas, court orders, and search warrants to compel production of information and testimony by and relating to members of the news media, subject to the Privacy Protection Act, 42 U.S.C. § 2000aa, and the approval of the department's leadership in some instances," the memo states. "The attorney general must also approve efforts to question or arrest members of the news media."

As I alluded to above, I find US corporate media's bloodless, minutiae-focused reporting on Bondi's actions here curious and alarming given that the Trump regime is giving itself the power to come after them and their journalists. Obviously the regime is acting in response to the embarrassing leaks surrounding Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and the investigation DNI Tulsi Gabbard is conducting into those leaks. None of this is happening in a vacuum however, and I don't know who it serves to report only in the narrow context of the regime's narrative here.

Like let's cut the crap right? During his first administration, Trump's Department of Justice already tried to go after reporters to expose their sources. Trump is a guy who threatened journalists with implied carceral sexual assault if they didn't give up their sources, on the campaign trail. The Kelpto Kaiser has literally said negative reporting about himself and his regime should be "illegal." The regime is weaponizing the FCC and holding McCarthy-esque hearings lead by fascist conspiracy crank-turned Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene to target NPR and PBS for criticizing Trump and admitting LGBTQ people exist in American life. Trump is literally exerting so much pressure on CBS over the editing on a 60 Minutes segment featuring Kamala Harris (a woman he already beat in the 2024 US election) that the program's longtime editor resigned because the show's independence was compromised.

I honestly couldn't give a rats ass about warmongers working for a fascist regime who get caught leaking, but surely it doesn't take a psychic to realize that the would-be dictator already targeting media that criticizes or opposes his fascist agenda, is going to use new Department of Justice guidelines that let him more freely target media that criticize or oppose his fascist agenda, to further target media that criticizes or opposes his fascist agenda. This isn't rocket science here. For corporate media outlets to pretend this story is purely about internal leaks inside Pete Hegseth's staff strains credulity, and would appear to be very shortsighted indeed.

Common Dreams · Bondi Shreds Biden-Era Protections for Journalists as Trump White House Hunts Leakers | Common DreamsOne critic warned that President Donald Trump "almost certainly will abuse the legal system to investigate and prosecute his critics and the journalists they talk to."

"The results speak for themselves. In the first 100 days alone, the administration has:

- Deleted thousands of datasets from agency websites
- Closed agencies’ Freedom of Information Act offices
- Used disappearing messaging apps and failed to preserve government records
- Ordered federal health agencies to stop communicating with the public
- Gutted a key surveillance oversight board
- Mass-fired inspectors general
- Replaced independent, professional leadership at the National Archives with unqualified appointees
- Attempted to illegally destroy agency records
- It’s hard to imagine what the next 1,361 days of Trump’s administration will hold.

But one thing is clear: FPF’s Classified Catalog will help journalists, researchers, Freedom of Information Act requesters, litigators, and members of Congress alike keep track of Trump’s assault on our right to know. And, most importantly, it will help us fight back."
