Scored some ramps on a nature walk with the kiddo!

Wild ramps are a leek/onion/garlic relative that grows all over sunny hillsides in this part of the country during the early spring. People are passionate about them - there's festivals and everything.

Dig em up! But always have some behind to propagate next year.

They're great grilled, but we didn't have a ton and I had a bunch of leftover mashed potatoes so, I present to you: ramp latkes!

#CandelariaNaturePreserve celebrates four years of restoration

"Just because a species is non-native does not make it an invasive one, and some non-native species function to support restoration."

by Emmett Di Mauro and Elijah Ritch
February 7, 2025

"On Jan. 31, the Candelaria Nature Preserve in #Albuquerque hosted a tour of its ongoing #rewilding project. The public tours are given on the last Friday of every month from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and cover the preserve’s efforts to restore the 90 acres of former farmland in the North Valley, according to the Ciudad Soil & Water Conservation District website.

"Partnering with the City of Albuquerque Open Space Division, the Ciudad Soil & Water Conservation District provides an annual report on some goals for the Candelaria Nature Preserve, including plans for soil health. The project is in the fourth year of its 20-year span. The 2023 report can be found on its website.

"The guided tours are led by volunteers from the Friends of the Candelaria Nature Preserve, like Ruth Salvaggio.

"'What we’re showing here is restoration,' Salvaggio said.

"One example of this restoration is the addition of logs, which were brought in to create habitat, Salvaggio said. This invites #wildlife to make use of the land again. She also said the nature preserve planted several varieties of plant life for #butterflies and created an entire field dedicated to #pollination.

"The process of rewilding at the Candelaria Nature Preserve entails “transitioning the Preserve from non-sustainable agriculture to a mosaic of habitats that will support diverse native wildlife: wet and dry areas, hedgerows, grasslands, upland #shrublands, #ConservationBuffers, and #forage for wildlife,' according to the Friends of Candelaria Nature Preserve’s website.

"Just because a species is non-native does not make it an invasive one, and some non-native species function to support restoration. The workers carefully considered the place of certain #InvasiveSpecies, such as #ElmTrees.

"'They provide a canopy for birds,' Salvaggio said. 'They’re serving a purpose.'

"However, part of the project is to prevent new elms from growing, according to Salvaggio.

"#Teff, a type of grass native to Ethiopia and similar to #millet and#quinoa, was implemented in the preserve. Teff roots are shallow and the plant dies upon releasing its seeds, meaning teff is beneficial to the soil, Salvaggio said. In this way, teff acts as a natural mulch and a '#NurseCrop' that will support native plants in the future.

"Many #NativePlants are found in the preserve, too, including #amaranth, #BlueGrama, #sacaton, #mesquite, #saltbrush and #nightshade.

"One of the destinations on the tour was the nursery, where many native plants begin their lives. Later, they are taken and planted in select areas, including the mosaics — plots designed to be flooded — Salvaggio said. Dispersed wildlife such as #Mesquitetrees and #SacatonGrass grows in these areas.

"The work takes place on plots of former farmland separated by historic #acequias. An end goal is to meld the former farm plot zones to allow for the cohesive spread of the wildlife and return the land to its pre-farmed state, Salvaggio said.

"Bringing the land to its #PreFarmed state also includes careful land #terraforming in select areas, Salvaggio said. This is meant to carve out the original, natural #arroyos of the area.

"The guided tours are currently the only way for members of the public to see the Candelaria Nature Preserve. However, anyone can volunteer at the preserve from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. every Monday and Friday."

25 Edible Wild #Plants To #Forage For In Early Spring

Written by Author Elizabeth Waddington

"As the first signs of spring arrive, and winter fades into the rear view mirror, you will likely be busy planting many of the crops that will sustain you for the rest of the year.

"This time of year, after winter stores are almost depleted and before this year’s crops are ready, is traditionally known as the ‘hungry gap’.

"Foraging for edible wild plants, however, can help you fill that gap. Wild greens can be an important source of nutrients at this time of the year.

"In this article, we’ll take a look at 25 common edible wild plants that you can look for around this time.

"Many of them you might even find right there on your very own property. Of course, the plants you find will depend on exactly where you live. But you should find some edible wild plants wherever you may be.

Tips For Foraging

"Before we begin, here are a few tips to help you stay safe and forage #sustainably:

- Never eat anything that you cannot be 100% certain you have identified correctly.
- Think about potential contaminants. Don’t eat anything that may have been treated or from near sources of pollution. Try to find foods as far from human activity as possible when out and about in the countryside or the wilds.
- Check the rules on foraging where you live. (Rules and laws vary. Sometimes, foraging for personal use is permitted on public land, sometimes it is prohibited.)
- Always ask permission from the landowner before foraging on private land.
- If you are allowed to forage, never take more than you need. Wherever possible, leave root systems in place, taking only small, sustainable amounts so the plants can continue to grow. Try to only forage from abundant wild food sources.
- When you are out foraging, take care to respect and take care of the ecosystems you are passing through. Cause no damage, and leave no litter behind."

#Transition ?

Looks like it's time for another #introduction ! I'm TJ, I live on ~50 acres of stolen Oneida land (central NY), where I live with my partner, a rotating cast of my kids, farm helpers, and a slew of #livestock and #pets.

We #forage and #garden, and for the 2024 season we've produced about 85% of what we will eat at home for the year.
We generate more electricity than we use.

I fund this with a tech job (see my other acct at fedia.social/@TJHob), my partner works full time on the homestead.

Please enjoy some pictures from over the years.

You all know that I #forage, and today's hike was to get cranberries from a bog that has been dependable over the years, perhaps because not many journey there. So,

left picture: down that road, around a curve, over a slight hill, then straight on towards sunrise, there is an oasis with a cranberry bog.

right picture: oh my, yes, the water table is shallow here, but goodness.....this puddle is actually outflow from my oasis, which is completely flooded and no cranberries.

But, look for another toot on my success of the day. #hiking #dunes #ProvinceLands #cranberries

This is pathetic really, but the truth is that this income from this restaurant in downtown Nashville represents 10% of my Gross business income for the whole year
#chanterelle season was a bust this year, but they got 4# early on from me, not paid for....
Spicebush berry is coming in good now despite the severe drought we have here, maybe I should drive up there and "donate" that too!

Did a blog post on blackberries. I was going to write the entire document on what to forage in August but this is just what I have so far so why not post it. Another post about some other wild fruit in the next few days.

Idk I'll eventually complete the whole thing at some point this month. Read it if you wish.

#CauliflowerMushroom - #SparassisCrispa.
One of my fave #edible & #medicinal #WildMushrooms. It's found in many places around the world, including forests on #VancouverIsland.
We #forage for these wild #mushrooms & use it in making some soups & stir fry dishes.

It's used often in #traditional #Chinese #medicine #TCM because it contains active #pharmacological ingredients. In order to study its medicinal value better, the genomic sequence of S. crispa was published in Oct 2018.

Dry weight of the #basidiocarp was found to contain up to 43.6% #BetaGlucan, which was approved for the treatment of #cancer in #Japan & recommended for #COVID19 patients to overcome #inflammation.

Experiments suggest that S. crispa contains chemicals that may stimulate the #ImmuneSystem & has many #biological properties including: #AntiTumor, #antiviral activity (reverse transcriptase inhibitory activity), #neuroprotection, #cardioprotection, #AntiInflammation, #hyperlipidemia, #AntiDiabetic medication, #antimicrobial compounds, & methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus #MRSA.
