I can't agree unless they are harassing people. we should federate with any server with people with any opinions unless they have users that tag others when they don't want to be tagged or pollute hashtags (or do illegal shit). that's the fedi magic. like the web with horrible websites, everybody can freely browse/communicate etc and we never need to see what we don't want to. except when people get tagged, and we should treat that like spam. block some servers etc. #fediblockmeta

The more that you've fought for speech rights to criticize Israel and been called antisemitic for doing so, the more likely you're a lefty who also understands that we can't just try to shut down conservatives who hold views we consider abhorrent.

It's not simple. People will really get their feelings hurt even when we are careful to try not to do so. Some things must be said to have important conversations. Such open spaces cannot be made fully "safe".

If the web rolled out today, many would demand that browsers not be able to access conservative websites. They'd blackout or replace certain terms. To avoid having to see misinfo or stuff that was upsetting. There would be banners that shamed you for using a browser that didn't adhere to such a code of conduct. And if you complained, you'd be told you're free to use whatever you want. That a tiny web of lefties with most folks remaining on services like AOL is great for everybody. #fediblockmeta

I remember (on an account that predates this one and is no longer active) when there was a mass defederation of fosstodon for racism. A larger amount of instances decided to not defederate at that time for various reasons. That was over a year ago.

Now folks are badly getting burned as a result of fosstodon having other issues on top of its racism (that was never fully resolved). Racism in the Fediverse seems to be the primary test for if an instance will have future problems down the line.

So maybe stop downplaying racism?

AFAICT #Section230 defaults the internet to small, independent websites letting people post dumb shit. And that's great cause sometimes that stuff isn't actually dumb, it was just unlikely to be thought of or said, especially by the wealthy/powerful. It was low-key genius.

Without it, everybody would need to be a lot more careful. Kinda like what we see with overly cautious moderation here on this social network of small, independent websites. IMHO

On three separate occasions, Ro has fantasized about murdering queer people of colour with baseball bats.

In the United States and Canada, "a baseball bat to the face" is synonymous with anti-queer violence. The concepts are so impossible to separate here, that homophobic murders are literally referred to as "gay bashing".

When you defend #TheBadSpace, you are defending some of the most mask-off queerphobia imaginable.

This is just so wildly bad faith.

#TheBadSpace is not a neutral tool. It is repeatedly used to target, harass, and stalk queer people for being queer.

Ro himself has repeatedly, openly fantasized about doing gay-bashing - generally towards queer people of colour.

If people genuinely wanted to use blocklists to fight bigotry, they wouldn't be rallying behind the one ran by one of the most blatantly transphobic people on fedi.

It’s not because they are ignorant or unaware of their tone. They know are being hostile because of their dislike of Black voices. They admit this is private all the time to their peers all the time. I’ve seen the conversations. They do it because they know other white people will see the hostile response ignore the initial comment that instigated it. That’s how racism operates. It depends on preconceived notions to operate. And no matter how a white person identifies politically, they all know how this works and will leverage it at the drop of a hat when they feel threatened in situations they instigate most of the time. This insidiousness is a big part of fedi culture, which explains why so many people choose centralized platforms over this space.
