Boosting is really important on the Fediverse because it makes whatever you boost federate to the entire servers of all your followers. A boosted public post appears on your followers' timelines, but also becomes searchable to everyone on the servers of your followers.

Instead of an algorithm, the Fediverse relies on human beings sharing stuff they find interesting. This process creates a wonderful chain of discovery.

To boost something here, click the 🔁 or 🚀 button below the post.

Mastodon's server software has just been updated, it is now on all servers that have updated to the latest version 4.4.0.

The biggest change is the revamping of the mobile website interface, it now uses screen space much more effectively and has a main menu identical to the desktop site (click ☰ to see it).

If you've previously avoided the mobile website, you might want to try it again?

If you enjoy using the website, you can install it as an app: fedi.tips/how-to-install-web-a

You can discover thousands of hand-picked Fediverse accounts organised into hundreds of different topics on the FediFollows website at:

➡️ fedi.directory

- To follow an account listed on the site, paste its address into your search box on Mastodon etc.

- To find out more about an account, click on its address to see its profile.

You don't need to wait for me to randomly post accounts on an interesting topic, the site has accounts for lots of topics! 🙂

A common question about Mastodon is the difference between favourites and bookmarks:

⭐ Favourites are the "likes" of Mastodon. If you favourite a post, it lets the author know you enjoyed it and adds your username to the "favourites" section below that post.

🔖 Bookmarks are a private way of keeping track of posts you want to go back to later. When you bookmark a post, no one else knows about it. Bookmarking just adds the post to your own private list of bookmarks.

In case you missed it, there is now a Fediverse alternative to Strava called Wanderer:

➡️ wanderer.to

There is a public server list at:

➡️ wanderer.to/servers

To sign up on a server, click on "Create Account", then "Login", then "Make One".

If you're running your own public Wanderer server you can add it to the list at github.com/Flomp/wanderer/disc

Techy people can self-host using instructions at wanderer.to/run/installation

I can't believe I have to say this mastodon. This isn't 1996, and you're not learning how to use Eudora:

When you're replying to a boosted post: Do. Not. CC. Everyone.

Reply directly to the person you're trying to speak to. Remove the @'s to everyone else not directly involved in the conversation.

yes, I know the clients automatically chain on the usernames of everyone involved in the post, but this is 1990s era basic netiquette and not magic.

Okay, that's weird. I just noticed a spelling flag when editing a post. Has Mastodon recently added a spell-check function? (I have spell-check turned off for Chrome, which is the browser I access Mastodon with.)

Edit: I'm looking for a way to turn that off, as it does not play well with either my eyesight or my ADHD.

Mastodon sometimes introduces new features when its server software is updated. If you want to use these new features, your server has to be running the latest version of Mastodon.

You can see your server's version on its desktop website in the bottom left corner, and on its mobile website at the bottom of the site's "About" page. It looks like "v4.3.9" or similar.

Latest version of #FediAlgo, the customizable timeline algorithm / filtering system for your Mastodon feed, allows for the use of multiple accounts on multiple Mastodon servers. Also fixes some #GoToSocial interoperability issues.

If you want to change the order of your pinned posts, do these steps:

1. Click the pinned post you want to put at the top, so that you are now in the enlarged view of that post
2. Click ⋯ and then "Unpin"
3. Wait a little bit
4. Click ⋯ and then "Pin"

It's important you click to enlarge the post before you unpin it, because otherwise it will disappear back to its original place on your timeline and it may be fiddly to find it again (especially if it's an older post).

People of the #Fediverse do your thing, again! I need tips for a browser beyond the usual. I'm currently using #Firefox (my browser of choice for a very long time), but tabs recently keep crashing all the time - an it's particularly annoying when (for work) I am doing something on a platform that doesn't save things automatically (notoriously my uni stuff).

So, write me your suggestions for a private, stable, and reliable browser!

Ik ben op zoek naar een nieuwe ereader: ik lees nu nog op een Kindle Paperwhite (v 10), maar ik wil minder afhankelijk worden van amazon.

Welke andere ereader zouden jullie aanraden? Of toch bij mijn paperwhite blijven (ben wel fan van dit scherm!)?

Anyone can start their own totally independent server on the Fediverse, you don't need to be a techy person or rich.

If you're non-technical you can use "managed hosting" where the hosting company not only hosts your server but also does all the techy stuff for you behind the scenes. A small server on managed hosting costs a few euros/dollars a month to run with everything included.

Lots more info about this in the guide at:

Question about proper Fedi behavior.

When I toot about Christianity/Judaism/Islam I usually put # for the 3 religions, not just the one religion mentioned because in my mind they're related and if you're part of one of them you should know about the other two.

Now someone told me that my use of # is misleading and I should only use the # of the religion mentioned in the toot.

Please let me know your opinion on this and don't hesitate to tell me I'm indeed wrong!

If you transfer your account to another server, you can always move back if you change your mind.

As long as you don't delete your old accounts, you can move back and forth as often as you want. (However, it can sometimes take a week or two for some of your followers to be transferred over, and it's generally best to wait 30 days between transfers.)

You can find full step-by-step instructions for account transfers and lots of questions answered at:

Mastodon supports posting audio files as well as videos and images. Audio is played using a dedicated player if your app or interface supports it.

The audio can be any length as long as the file size is below your server's limit (usually 99mb). Formats are MP3, OGG, WAV, FLAC, OPUS, AAC or 3GP.

I've attached an example audio and artwork to this post, if your app or interface supports it you can play it below.

If you want to reply to a thread but just want to reply to the original poster who started it, delete the other account addresses mentioned in your reply.

If you're on a computer and using Mastodon through a web browser, you can do this ultra-quickly by just pressing backspace before you write the reply. By default the addresses of people other than the original poster are highlighted, so pressing backspace removes them.

(Thanks to @MartinEscardo for the backspace tip 👍 )
