…One #eyewitness cited in the court filings, a young woman referred to as K.M., provided a sworn affidavit that claimed the teenage girl was naked, partygoers were there to “engage in sexual activities,” & “alcohol, cocaine, ecstasy … & marijuana” were present. The teenage girl was identified in the filings only as A.B.

"It was then that I spotted the man in the green shirt, blood now cascading down his face. He locked eyes with me and dove forwards, fists raised. Again and again he came at me while his mates attacked the comrades around me. Eventually I took a sharp hit to the jaw but not enough to take me out of the line. It ached but I was sure it wasn't broken, we had to hold the entrance.

(. . .)

Later that evening, finally coming down off the adrenaline, we got a harsh reminder of the ever present danger of the far right. As we entered a gay bar to celebrate our friend's birthday the bouncer warned us that there was the potential that the venue would be attacked by the mob, and if that happened they would go into lock down. This is the reality of far-right mobilisations in towns and cities all over the country. It’s why, no matter how scary it is, we have to stand up for each other, and fight back in defence of our communities where necessary."

#IFJ / Record number of Palestinian journalists’ arbitrarily arrested by Israel

#Israel has significantly increased arrests and detentions of Palestinian journalists since the start of the war in #Gaza in October 2023. As of May 29, 2024, Israel had arrested a record 76 Palestinian journalists since the war began, according to the article.

20 Palestinian journalists are currently being held under administrative detention, which allows indefinite detention without charges or trial based on secret evidence. Amongst them photojournalist Bilal Al Tawil, and prominent journalist Rula Hassanein, whose home was raided.

Palestinian journalist unions accuse Israel of trying to intimidate journalists and control the narrative by arresting those covering the Israeli occupation.

The IFJ condemns Israel's "over-reaching campaign to harass and prosecute Palestinian journalists" and vows to advocate for journalist safety. At least 102 Palestinian journalists and media workers have been killed since the Gaza war began, according to IFJ data.

www.ifj.orgPalestine: Record number of Palestinian journalists’ arbitrarily arrested by Israel / IFJ[UPDATE 29.05.2024] Seventy-six Palestinian journalists and media workers have been arrested by Israel’s security forces in the occupied West Bank and Gaza since the Hamas-led attack in southern Israel on 7 October, 2023. To date, 50 of them are still in prison, including 20 who have been subject to administrative detention, according to the Palestinian Journalists’ Syndicate (PJS). The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) is alarmed by the record number of journalists arbitrarily arrested as part of Israel’s broader campaign to intimidate and deter them from reporting on the military occupation. The IFJ calls on Israel to halt its persecution of Palestinian journalists, and immediately and unconditionally release them all.

#Gaza / Q&A: Journalist Shrouq Al Aila on what cameras can’t show about the war in Gaza

An interview with Shrouq Al-Aila, a Palestinian journalist and photographer, who offers insights into the challenges and risks faced by journalists covering the conflict in Gaza. Al-Aila emphasizes the power of visual storytelling to provide a human face to the story, showcasing the impact of war on everyday lives. Despite the dangers, she continues to capture powerful images, bringing attention to the plight of Palestinians in Gaza and offering a unique perspective that cannot be ignored.

[...] Al Aila spoke to #CPJ from #Rafah, in southern #Gaza where she was sheltering with her young daughter. Since the interview she moved to a tent in Deir al-Balah to escape Israel’s expanded offensive in Rafah, the family’s third displacement since the war began. The interview was conducted using WhatsApp voice notes; every time she paused in her narration, the sound of Israeli drones, what Gazans call the “zanana” (buzzing sound), was audible on the recordings.

#Gaza / RSF files third complaint with ICC about Israeli war crimes against journalists in Gaza

RSF's latest complaint reiterates its request to the #ICC prosecutor to prioritize the investigation into the #IDF's alleged crimes against journalists in #Gaza since October 7, 2023. The complaint details eight new cases of Palestinian journalists killed or injured by the IDF between December 20, 2023, and May 20, 2024, in addition to the cases previously submitted.

[…] "Impunity endangers journalists not only in Palestine but also throughout the world. Those who kill journalists are attacking the public's right to information, which is even more essential in times of conflict. They must be held accountable, and RSF will continue to work to this end, in solidarity with Gaza’s reporters. —- Antoine Bernard, RSF’s advocacy and assistance director
