What Remains by Muhannad Shono 2, Desert X 2025, Coachella Valley, California

Muhannad Shono is known for his innovative exploration of identity, memory, and cultural heritage. His large-scale installations transform common elements such as plastic pipe, string, or sand into intricate systems. Drawing inspiration from the complexities of his upbringing in the Arabian Peninsula, Shono combines traditional techniques with modern forms to address themes of displacement, transformation, and the intersection of past and present.

_The Evening Post_, 7 April 1925:
DRIFTING SAND
FORESTRY OFFICERS INSPECT
COMBATING RELENTLESS
ADVANCE.
Good agricultural #land in various parts of the Dominion is being seriously threatened by the continuous and unrelenting drift of sand, and although much has been done by the State Forestry Service… to combat this, further experimental work is at present being carried out…. Altogether there are 92,000 acres [37K ha] of dune country in the #Wellington area, and 183,000 acres [74K ha] in the #Auckland district.
The menace… has become manifest particularly along the coast of the North Island between Wellington and New Plymouth, and the north coast of Auckland…
The theory advanced for the spread of the sand dune country is that before the advent of the European population…, the greater part of the sandy land was more or less stable, and Dr. L. #Cockayne, hon. botanist to the Department, declares that over-grazing and injudicious stock of land has caused it to become loose.
… settlers along the coast… refuted this suggestion…
As the waste sandy country is privately owned, very little action is being taken…, but… the Government, by… the Sand Drift Act… has power to undertake the work itself.

Abusing beaches as highways

"Overcrowding due to a surge in visitors at some of Queensland's pristine beaches has raised safety and environmental concerns. Reports of offences including reckless driving, littering and even defecating have increased at 4WD beaches in recent years amid a domestic tourism boom."

Traffic on beaches
It's the Wild West - turning beach ecology into a Woolies car park

Off-road vehicles are allowed to cause "serious ecological harm" to beaches, dunes and estuaries ecosystems. Vehicles traffic is causing "unequivocal serious and widespread damage" to coastal dune ecosystems. "All of the species had suffered negative effects caused by off-road vehicles. The four-by-fours running over them basically crush them to death."

"Professor Schlacher said the Noosa North Shore, Rainbow Beach, K'gari and Bribie Island were among the car-accessible beaches that were being "pummelled to death"". On Bribie Island "there can be 1,200 vehicles on the beach in one day, and that's ridiculous. It's just like a Woolies car park."

ABC News · Queensland study prompts calls for 4WD ban on beaches being 'pummelled to death'By Jessica Ross

“Dunes and Desert Hills” — Early morning light on sand dunes and eroded desert hills, Death Valley.

Sand dunes were the primary attraction when I first visited Death Valley a couple of decades ago. They are visual icons of the place, and any new visitor would want to see them. For me, a person whose wilderness experience had been almost exclusively focused on the High Sierra, the dunes were exotic and new. Over time I discovered that there is a much more to this place, and the dunes are no longer at the top of my list of Death Valley destinations. Yet, I can’t let a trip go by without at least a brief visit…continues: gdanmitchell.com/2025/03/20/du

“Sand Dune Abstract” — Sand dune patterns in evening light, Death Valley.

I first photographed this specific subject in Death Valley well over a decade ago, and perhaps closer to two decades. I “discovered” it by accident while driving back from visiting an entirely different feature. I had stopped in this location to photograph other things, and as I scanned the landscape I noticed this section of almost pure sand dunes. I went here again this year at the end of February when the light on my intended subject died early, and I thought I might be able to work with the soft light in this spot…continues: gdanmitchell.com/2025/03/16/sa
