Paper: #ClimateChange: Assessment of the Vulnerability of #NuclearPowerPlants and Approaches for their Adaptation

Adobe Acrobat PDF Document - on 6/2/25 at 12:01 PM

"Climate change will create specific risks and challenges for nuclear power plants and the electricity system as a whole. #ExtremeWeather events caused by climate change – such as #floods, #storms, #HeatWaves and #droughts – have already affected the operation of #NuclearPower plants. Any increase in the temperature of the water used to cool nuclear power plants can also lead to reductions in their power output due to decreasing thermal efficiency.

"This report sets out the adaptation strategies that can be effectively implemented to improve the resilience of existing plants as well as any new installations. The costs of adaptation to climate change can vary significantly depending on the type of reactor, the climate change issues affecting them, as well as the applicable regulations and standards. However, while these adaptation costs can, in some cases, be significant, the costs of inaction – both directly at the plant level and indirectly for the electricity system – are likely to be even higher."

Flames to floods: how Europe’s devastating wildfires are fuelling its next climate crisis

Fire-scorched land is less able to handle climate-driven downpours.

In January 2024, Nasa reported that #ClimateChange is intensifying #wildfire conditions, noting that the frequency of the most extreme #wildfires had more than doubled over the past two decades. While some of this is driven by natural weather variability, human-induced warming is clearly playing a major role. Decades of rising temperatures combined with longer and more severe #droughts have created ideal conditions for wildfires to ignite and spread.

This year, another brutal #Mediterranean wildfire season is unfolding right before our eyes, with numerous active wildfire fronts across the region. As of July 22 2025, 237153 hectares have burned in the #EU – an increase of nearly 78% from the same period last year. The number of fires rose by about 45%, and #CO2 #emissions increased by 23% compared to 2024. These are terrifying statistics.

@petergleick The #Trump #kakistocracy will probably fire Brian Fuchs and shutdown the National #Drought Mitigation Center so that there will be no awareness of #droughts and #Wildfires can simply be ascribed to “Acts of God”, like the predicted #TexasFloods where endangered children were not evacuated because a #MAGA coward didn’t want to be accused of ‘crying wolf’ on the slim chance that the #floods didn’t materialize.

#Resist #fascism in #USpol to combat #ClimateChange.

#Iraq is grappling with one of the worst #droughts in its history. #Water levels in Turkish dams feeding Iraq’s #rivers remain critically low, and this year’s winter rains have failed to provide enough water for drinking or farming. As droughts become a recurring crisis, the environmental and cultural heritage of the Fertile Crescent – the cradle of ancient Mesopotamia – is slowly vanishing. Driving along (as you do) ABC National was on with some wank discussing data centers water requirements. Right off the bat, this ‘expert’ (didn’t catch his name) talked about everything water utilities should be doing to accommodate data centre and deflected every thing from #water shortages, droughts, arid country and what the impact on civil society will be during water restrictions… I lasted 5 mins tops. I turned the radio off before I caused an accident. Thanks #ABC for making my day by giving the pro-data center guy oxygen and painting the elephant in the room fade-to-black.

I tell you what, if there is such a big market for stupid LLM-based chatbots, Data Centres don’t have to be built here don’t you know. There is such a thing as the Internet and its infrastructure has been used for decades. Begs the question doesn’t it? WHO benefits ($$) from buildling a data centre to power Generative AI (aka chatbot) in Australia?

Had it up to here with GAI…

Ways to address the food crisis -
1. Minimize red meat #consumption, especially, #beef
2. Allow #fertility rates to fall and focus on #redistribution of existing #food to feed the #poor
3. Since working in #farms will soon be impossible thanks to #heatwaves #droughts #floods #pests ; build enclosed #vertical farms and #precision #fermentation

International Survey Shows 81% Back Forcing #BigOil to Pay for #Climate Destruction

"People are no longer buying the lies. They see the fingerprints of #FossilFuel giants all over the #storms, #floods, #droughts, and #wildfires devastating their lives, and they want accountability," said the head of one green group.

by Eloise Goldsmith, Jun 19, 2025

"Large majorities of people around the world support both taxing #oil, #gas, and #coal companies for the #EnvironmentalDamage made worse by fossil fuels and using higher taxes on #polluters to support communities most impacted by the #ClimateCrisis, according to the results of an international survey released Thursday.

"The study, which was jointly commissioned by #Greenpeace International and #Oxfam International, surveyed roughly 1,200 people in each of these 13 countries: #Brazil, #Canada, #France, #Germany, #India, #Italy, #Kenya, #Mexico, #Philippines, #SouthAfrica, #Spain, #UnitedKingdom, and the #UnitedStates. The research was conducted by the data company Dynata, and field work was done between May 9-28, 2025. Greenpeace noted that, taken together, the countries represent close to 50% of the globe's population.

"The results of the survey showed a whopping 81% of those surveyed would support taxes fossil fuel companies to pay for damages wrought by 'fossil-fuel driven climate disasters.'

"These survey results send a clear message: people are no longer buying the lies. They see the fingerprints of fossil fuel giants all over the storms, floods, droughts, and wildfires devastating their lives, and they want accountability," said #MadsChristensen, the executive director of #GreenpeaceInternational.

" 'It's only fair that those who caused the crisis should pay for the damage, not those suffering from it,' he added.

Climate Extremes as the Norm

"In the absence of effective global climate mitigation actions, we may thus witness a qualitative regime shift from a world dominated by individual climate-related hazards and impacts to one where compound occurrences become the norm."

#PlanetaryWaves linked to wild summer weather have tripled since 1950, study finds

By SETH BORENSTEIN
Updated 4:51 PM EDT, June 16, 2025
WASHINGTON (AP) — "#ClimateChange has tripled the frequency of atmospheric wave events linked to extreme summer weather in the last 75 years and that may explain why long-range computer forecasts keep underestimating the surge in killer #HeatWaves, #Droughts and #floods, a new study says.

"In the 1950s, Earth averaged about one extreme weather-inducing planetary wave event a summer, but now it is getting about three per summer, according to a study in Monday’s Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Planetary waves are connected to 2021’s deadly and unprecedented Pacific Northwest heat wave, the 2010 Russian heatwave and Pakistan flooding and the 2003 killer European heatwave, the study said.

" 'If you’re trying to visualize the planetary waves in the northern hemisphere, the easiest way to visualize them is on the weather map to look at the waviness in the jet stream as depicted on the weather map,' said study co-author Michael Mann, a University of Pennsylvania climate scientist.

"Planetary waves flow across Earth all the time, but sometimes they get amplified, becoming stronger, and the jet stream gets wavier with bigger hills and valleys, Mann said. It’s called quasi-resonant amplification or QRA."
