To everyone posting #insect photos so far this week: THANK YOU! They are AWESOME! I'm really enjoying them. Especially the #bees, but there have been some kick ass #dragonfly and #butterfly photos... plus a cool #spider photo or two. Truly choice stuff! Great timeline cleansers. Thank you. Thank you!
Edit: big shout out to all the awesome #flower photos as well. They are just as delightful!
After watching this twelve-spotted skimmer dragonfly zip around at lightspeed for minutes without landing, I finally got it after it landed on this dried out rosemary bush.
It kind of looks like it's drinking from a straw, lol.
I found myself face-to-face with this fella while picking marionberries at my mom’s house. It let me get so close I thought it might be dead, but it finally flew off when my phone brushed against one of its wings. #Dragonfly #MacroPhotography #iPhonePhotography #OregonOutdoors #PNW
Something absolutely unbelievable and magical happened today, I could still cry tears of happiness. #LoveOfMyLife and I are still amazed and still can't believe that this happened.
It was a really hot day, my wife and I were just strolling through town, eating here, drinking there... just a really lazy day.
Then I saw a dragonfly, at a place with no water nearby, the river was a 100m or so. The dragonfly looked beautiful, but also a little confused.
I stretched my hand out and what happened next brought tears to my eyes: the dragonfly flew to my hand, landed on my fingers and started holding steadfastly at my fingers - as to say "I am so tired, please being me to water".
First I thought it'll fly away but it didn't. It settled there, as if to looking at me and asking for help.
We immediately turned around and slowly walked towards the river. At one point, a breeze came and I had to cover her a bit so she wouldn't be swept away.
When we got close enough to the river and all the plants there, he* left my hand and flew to the next leaf and landed on one. There, I was allowed to gently stroke his wings a last time and it really looked as if he was raising her head and saying "thank you"
We were so absolutely amazed, it was really such an unbelievably magic situation - I still can't believe what happened there...
Wow
Edit: typos
*: 2nd Edit: I was kindly (thank you a million) informed that it was a male Calopteryx splendens
What kind of dragonfly is this? It stopped midair as it was flying around me this morning and dropped onto its back. I picked it up and set it on a table next to a bowl of water. It’s alive but barely moving. I don’t see any injuries so hoping the big guy makes it. Thinking maybe it got into a pesticide or lost a fight with a wasp.

Widow skimmer #dragonfly I spied this morning while picking wild blackberries.

Seen on the wheelchair ramp outside our front door.
Took a break from breaking my brain with stats to photograph some insects by the canal.

The highlight of last weekend was the #dragonfly population at RSPB Strumpshaw Fen. Good numbers of both Scarce Chaser and Norfolk Hawker, both of which are relatively restricted in distribution across the UK. Didn't expect to see the two species sharing a single stick to perch on. #dragonflies #odonata #insects #invertebrates #UKWildlife #photography
Our yardman came today and it's looking much more presentable. Inspector Kengo seems satisfied.
A dragonfly stayed for a long time for me, but without a macro lens, it was a struggle.
One more day.
