Today's dandelion tidbit: that little white puff attached to a dandelion seed isn't JUST a parachute/hang glider to transport the seed. Once the seed comes to rest on the ground, the parachute can catch small movements in the air, holding the seed upright with the tip of the seed on the ground. As the air moves, the parachute causes the seed to rock back and forth, embedding the pointed end of the seed deeper and deeper into the ground. Dandelions plant themselves! #dandelions #bloomscrolling

Today’s dandelion tidbit: 100 grams of raw dandelion leaves have 14,000 international units of vitamin A, and 35 milligrams of vitamin C. That’s seven times the vitamin C found in the same weight of oranges. They also have significant amounts of potassium, iron, thiamine, calcium, riboflavin, protein, and vitamins K and B-complex. #dandelions #Bloomscrolling

Today's dandelion tidbit: dandelions are incredibly good for the soil. Their powerful roots loosen hard packed soil, aerate the ground, and help prevent erosion. And those same roots plunge deep beneath the surface, pulling up vital nutrients and making them available to other plants. They nourish our gardens as much as they nourish us! Today's dandelion tidbit: this is a single dandelion flower.What looks at a glance like a flower petal is, in fact, a whole flower, with a complete set of reproductive parts. Each flower head contains more than 100 of these tiny flowers, in a little community of sunny yellow. That's right, #dandelions are friendly in every way. #bloomscrolling #plantnerd

Today's dandelion tidbit: according to The Teeth of the Lion by Anita Sanchez, historians aren't sure exactly when dandelions first arrived on the American continent. A botanical survey of New England from 1692, however, reported dandelions as well established plants. Some colonists brought them on purpose, but no doubt the seeds also made the transAtlantic journey stuck to clothes and tools and animals. #dandelions #bloomscrolling

@MPaola It's in Germany.
I like your blog post and could only hope that such people read it.
Here in France, we have a different approach to #dandelions because it's one of the first salads in early spring (in supermarkets you get hybrides), and part of cultural heritage: flowers in alcohol or honey as a medicine and just for gourmets.

I live in a rural region where you have #nature but also the "super cleaners". I am also observing an increasing distance from nature, in which nature is

The #coltsfoot is out! It lives in the sandy areas alongside our road. I was so startled when we first moved here - what were these #dandelions doing out so early??

But they aren’t dandelions. The flowers do look different if you examine them closely, as do the stems that hold them up. Plus, the leaves don’t even make an appearance until the weather has warmed up, and those don’t look anything like dandelion leaves at all.

Does anyone know which #pollinators come to these? Our vernal miner bees aren’t even out yet, as far as I can tell.
