This is very serious business. Going on memory, my barber needed surgery because of long-term use of medication for Crohn's disease. He died of some complication from the surgery. He had the surgery, he seemed to be recovering well, and then, quite suddenly, he was gone.

Evidence is mounting that vagus nerve stimulation is a potentially effective therapy for some #IBD patients. In this small pilot study, clinically meaningful results were observed in participants, including "reduction in clinical disease activity associated with endoscopic improvement, reduced levels of faecal calprotectin and serum cytokines, and improved quality-of-life."

Many studies have explored the role of bacteria in #IBD, but research has been more sparse on viruses, which may hold valuable clues to disease triggers and development.

#Crohnsdisease eventually recurs in a substantial number of patients after resection surgery and explanations are elusive. Studies comparing patients achieving deep remission (both drug-free and drug-assisted) following surgery with those who do not could yield useful insights.

Treg cells are a category of T cells whose properties make them a candidate for potential treatment therapies for #IBD. We eagerly await the outcome of clinical trials using this approach that are currently underway.

Together we can make our voices heard. Let's not be satisfied with current #crohns treatments, which never work at all for some patients and eventually fail many. We urgently need to find the causes of #crohnsdisease rather than developing more band-aid-like medications. A cure for Crohn's IS possible if we make it the priority.
